Can I just leave them out on the side covered up in Clingfilm ? They won't defrost in time in the fridge

I never defrost in the fridge going on 35 years of doing it. If I defrost overnight only then I do put the food in the fridge until it us needed.

ellebelli · 28/06/2023 10:59

Am I doing it wrong?I defrost in the microwave...otherwise I would leave on a plate out the packet on the side(far back out of dogs reach)

Witchymcwitch · 28/06/2023 11:02

Cook in the oven from frozen! Takes about 30mins.

glast · 28/06/2023 11:28

Yep I do this, lower temp for 20 mins and turn up to get some colour on them, do it with full chickens too

BridportSpectacular · 28/06/2023 11:37

I just cook from frozen...bit slower and for a bit longer - if I've forgotten to get them out and put them on the side.

People on here are bats, just leave them on the side in their packet. Do posters seriously sit turning packets of sausages in cold water every 30 minutes?!

Some posters would absolutely freak out if they seen my defrosting methods. Hot outside and I decide I want a bbq? Meat out the freezer and straight on the patio table in full sun, defrosts in no time and none of us have died yet. Grin

That's more like it! 😜

WhimHoff · 28/06/2023 12:54

You can cook them from frozen in the oven

What is a defrosting tray??

You don't need a special hideously priced fancy defrosting tray (they have grooves to allow water to drain away (tip: if expecting water to come out in any volume, leave on draining board overhanging sink, slope tips into sink) and increase the surface area, so in theory will cool quicker but it is marginal) . Any metal tray will do. Spread out the sausages and cover with cling film, the metal conducts the cold away from the sausages and they thaw quicker.

I sometimes leave food In the microwave while it defrosts mine is in a shady part of the kitchen so I feel it's safe in the heat.

I never thought of that. Always leave it out. I'll try this from now on. Thanks for mentioning it.

Murpe · 28/06/2023 13:12

I used to be vigilant about defrosting all meat, until it occurred to me that Iceland must sell frozen sausages that can be cooked from frozen, so maybe in fact all sausages could be. Went to their website, looked at the instructions they have for their products, and it's 10-15 mins or so extra in the oven. However I at the very least partially defrost sausages enough to separate them, and do cook them for a really, really long time.

Hairyfairy01 · 28/06/2023 13:14

Wait - you are meant to defrost sausages before cooking them?

EmpressSoleil · 28/06/2023 13:42

People will be horrified but tbh, if I'm short on time, I've defrosted meat in hot water before! I know you're not meant to but it's always been fine.

I don't have room for stuff to be defrosting in the fridge so generally I'll take it out in the morning for an evening meal, or overnight if it's something I'm chucking in the slow cooker.

HonoriaLucastaDelagardie · 28/06/2023 14:15

I put sausages in a bowl of cold water, or on a plate and sit them in the microwave. But they don't take all day to defrost, an hour or so usually does it.

I suppose they take longer if they're squished together in the packet rather than spread out on a plate.

goingmadnow · 28/06/2023 14:38

@Ariela oh I've learnt something new !!

goingmadnow · 28/06/2023 14:39

They've defrosted

I can put them in the fridge now can't I ??

goingmadnow · 28/06/2023 14:40

Oops, name change fail

dementedpixie · 28/06/2023 14:40

Yes put them in the fridge until they need to be cooked

MonumentalLentil · 28/06/2023 15:01

LadyJ2023 · 28/06/2023 10:28

Can't see the point of defrosting lol chuck them in oven, fryer however you cook them

I do this, much easier, as long as you ensure they are cooked through.

arethereanyleftatall · 28/06/2023 15:07

I just go freezer to oven for all meat.

minipie · 28/06/2023 15:11

Ohh excellent tip about the metal baking tray. I nearly bought a defrosting tray the other day, glad I didn’t now.

TroysMammy · 29/06/2023 10:56

@Ariela I've had my defrosting tray for nearly 30 years, longer than some of my baking trays. It wouldn't have been hideously expensive because I couldn't afford much then. It's paid for itself many times over.
