Skane in Sweden

We have been invited to a wedding in the Skane area of Sweden next month. We are flying to Malmo and then planning to stay on for 10 days holiday after the ceremony. I have never been to Sweden before. I have looked at lots of photos and websites online but am a bit underwhelmed and wonder if we have made a mistake in deciding to make it into a holiday. It looks a bit featureless.

If anyone knows the area could you convince me if its merits? What’s it like scenically? What is there to do there? Are the cafes and restaurants super expensive? We are self catering, what nice distinctive things might we find in the supermarket to cook or take home? Can you recommend places to visit?

I have holidayed there once. It felt a bit "empty" and flat but I loved it as I am a massive Wallander fan.
I loved Lund, but it is quite small.
Ystad is only worth it if you are a Wallander fan, IMO
There are beautiful beaches in Osterlen, near Ystad. Quiet but beautiful.
You can also take the train to Copenhaguen from Malmo for a day trip.

Skane is pleasant but not super exciting. I lived in Lund for a few years. It's a cute university town 15 mins from Malmo. The coast north of Malmo has some nice bits and the beaches are sandy. But ten days just in Skane is a lot. I would consider getting the train up to Stockholm for a few days. Swedish trains are pretty good. You are also just 30mins from Copenhagen. Or get the ferry across from Helsinborg to Helsingor and spend some time on the north Danish coast. Beautiful beaches there and lots of summer houses you can rent on air bnb.

I'd aim for stockholm. It's an excellent city with loads to do. Go see the Vasa!

Well there is indeed a lot of nature, lakes and forests, if you're looking for a relaxing low key holiday. Very pretty in the summer but also not sure I would spend full 20 days there. Have you already booked accommodation and all? Malmö is just 30 min train ride from Copenhagen, which is lovely, I would definitely go there as well. IKEA Museum in Älmhult - they sell some cool limited edition stuff in the shop.

Eating and drinking out is quite expensive. But you will generally find nice cafes and bakeries. Cardamom buns are my favourite. Supermarkets are good. Lots of cheese and rye bread and a million different types of milk... salted liquorice... herrings...

Agree can you make your 10 days into a bit of a tour? I've heard Kalmar is lovely and has some life as a University town, and over the bridge from Öland where the Swedish Royal summer palace is, if you're into that.

I've stayed on Vänern lake which was lovely, but about 5/6 hours drive further north, but If you don't mind a big drive then agree Stockholm and the Vasa Museum are great.

Agree also that if you haven't been before then Copenhagen is worth a visit from Malmö.

Some great ideas, thank you. IKEA museum? Yes!

We had a summer wedding in Sweden a few years ago. We spent a few days in Copenhagen first, then got the train across “the Bridge”, spent a few days in Malmo which was fun, went to the wedding for 2 days then had a beach house not far from Simrishamn. The beach was lovely, water freezing! Stenshuvud National park is lovely. We really enjoyed the trip.

Lund is lovely. We lived in Copenhagen and used to go to Malmo (centre is lovely) and Lund very regularly. Exceptionally easy on the train. I would also break it up and do a couple of nights in Stockholm on the train- it's about 4 and a half hours but a lovely train ride through very nice countryside .
