Packing cubes. Useful or waste of time?

Thought I might try them as staying in several different places this year. Are they a help or a hindrance?

If you’re short on time, here’s a summary of the best packing cubes Mumsnetters are recommending on this thread:

I've just bought a set of non compression ones for my son to take inter-railing as a tester.

It's like a miraculous tardis, everything seems to have shrunk by half. I'd have said I was a good packer but these are next level.

Yes! Its bizarre how small everything seems to have become!

I bought some mesh laundry bags - you can see what's in them and they're much cheaper. I use one for socks, one for pants and then put dirty washing in them for the way back. They work really well.

I wouldn"t say they are much cheaper. My pack of 6 was £7, albeit it looks like they are £9 now, and your link is £7. But whatever works for you.

I wonder if cubes are the packing equivalent of using the Kondo method with drawers. You get more in if you are using the edges to hold things in rather than just stacking and using gravity/suitcase lid pressure to contain it.

I agree they're not the same, but they do the job for me, ie separating pants/t shirts/socks.

Just to update, I’m back from my first holiday using packing cubes - and they were a game changer! I rolled up all clothes into the large ones, used the small ones for underwear and the medium ones for swimwear and nightwear. We didn’t have to unpack, just kept the packing cubes on shelves and pulled out what we needed each day. It made things so much easier than usual.

I got the eono ones with mesh panels from Amazon, they were more expensive than some others but I was put off by reviews of zips breaking on those and these seem like great quality and will last for many holidays so I’m very happy with my choice!

We had the Primark ones plus a few sets from TK Maxx. None were the compression ones. As everyone says, they were very good for separating different types of clothing and putting whole cubes in drawers or on shelves. We might have used slightly too many and they were mostly empty on return as everything moved into the big laundry bags. It was still handy to have a cube with a full clothing change for the airport packed in the hand luggage. Will definitely use on all future trips!

I bought two sets of packing cubes. One from Ikea and another from Penneys/Primark.
I used both when I packed for my recent holiday.

I found the ones from Penneys were bigger and stored more clothes. The shoe ones from IKEA were clearly made for feet of a women's size 5 or smaller. I struggled to use them on my size 6 shoes.

Having used them on this holiday, I'm converted to using them whenever I go away now.
