What can I put in my "British" picnic?

We have some overseas guests coming to visit us and I would like to take them to a local beauty spot and have a picnic.

I don't think they have been to the UK before on holiday and so I would like to make it a traditional British summer picnic. There are DC, but from what I remember, they eat anything.

What would you include? I have some ideas, but it is all looking a bit beige!

Scones with jam and cream, potted meat sandwiches, scotch eggs a penguin each, a mixed salad bowl that no one eats, and lashings of ginger beer. Or wine, probably wine!

A dog that will spend the whole picnic straining on its leash to get at the food.

jam sandwiches and weak squash.

You could do cucumber sandwiches though I'm not sure how many British people have ever eaten one?

You could do a ploughmans?

Salt and vinegar crisps. Preferable supermarket own-brand type where you get 5 soggy crisps per bag.

Bottle of lemonade that no one can open (glue bottle top on for authentic experience).

Ants' nest to sit on (1 per person).

Those slices of pork pie with the boiled egg in the middle.

3 windbreaks to make sure your 'territory' is clearly marked (even if site is deserted).

Then you've nailed it!

Agree with this. 'A bit beige' is a perfect British picnic.

Cucumber sandwiches
Coronation chicken rolls
Cheese and pickle sandwiches
Scotch eggs
Pork pies
Sausage rolls
Chicken drumsticks
Battenburg cake
Club or Penguin biscuits
Crisps

Don't forget 'lashings of ginger beer'.

SabrinaThwaite · 27/06/2023 09:35

And tomatoes that you dip in a bit of salt - you have to bring the salt in little twists of grease proof paper.

MagpiePi · 27/06/2023 09:38

Drizzle - make sure you provide anoraks

All the classically british picnic foods I can think of are a bit beige!

To balance it out health wise, you could take a selection of crudités (cucumber, pepper, carrot, raw cauliflower also works very well) with a homemade dip (blitz up some sour cream, yoghurt, garlic, cheese & olive oil)

Group of young lads kicking a football into your picnic at intervals.

SoWhatEh · 27/06/2023 09:41

For a true English picnic, I'd do coronation chicken sandwiches and cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls (home made?) Scotch eggs, crisps (salt and vinegar always get non-UK people talking - loads of people expect to hate them but love them), some salad with crisp lettuce leaves, radishes, baby heritage tomatoes, fresh strawberries and either scones with jam and clotted cream or a good cake.

ODFOx · 27/06/2023 09:42

Sardine sandwiches, honey sandwiches, cake with cherries inside as well as on top, a rosy apple each, lashings of ginger beer and a bullseye each for afters. Or, if you aren't a 1930s child:

Cucumber sandwiches (cucumber peeled and very thinly sliced, layered in the sandwiches with a sprinkle of salt. Real butter, crusts off.

Ham sandwiches, butter, smear of (English) mustard.

Egg and cress sandwiches, sliced egg, butter, pinch of salt, drizzle of salad cream ( not mayonnaise). Cress. (Salad or water) will both work).

Victoria sponge with just jam.

Jam tarts

Fruit

Fruit cake ( or tea bread) and cheese..

Flasks of boiling water for tea.

And a malt loaf, sliced and buttered.
