Dairy free breakfast / snacks

Tinkietot · 27/06/2023 07:53

Really struggling with breakfasts at the moment. I use to love cereal and milk but I haven’t found a milk alternative I like (I have tried loads)

Any suggestions on ideas for breakfast or snacks. I want to loose weight but struggling with protein options as I’m not a big meat eater and now dairy isn’t an option. Snacking on seeds gets a bit 🥴

I miss babybel light, they were a good protein source and low in calories!

Porridge made with oat milk, (obviously the milk tastes much like the porridge itself, so doesn’t jar) add frozen berries.

Eggs - boiled, scrambled, poached (not fried if you are trying to lose weight). If Lactose is the problem eggs should be fine.

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/06/2023 07:59

Is dairy not an option because you want to lose weight?

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 27/06/2023 08:00

Peanut or almond butter on toast? Very tasty and full of protein. Or eggs?

I'm steadily losing weight and have fried eggs using a touch of oil, they aren't a no no

kelsaycobbles · 27/06/2023 08:06

Scrambled are worse than fried as they soak up the butter rather than float on the oil

sashh · 27/06/2023 08:11

Protein tends to be calorie dense but is full of good things.

I do 'protein for breakfast', I have

Eggs, boiled, scrambled in an omelet with mushrooms or cheese. I sometimes cook them in the toastie sandwich maker.

Slices of ham and cheese.

Yoghurt with nuts (Greek style full fat).

Nuts.

Olives.

Bacon, fried until crispy, then add a chopped tomato and boiling water and boil into a type of soup.

Pate - unconventional but hey.

Sausages and baked beans, either proper sausages or the ones in tins. Put in a jug in the microwave.

yumscrumfatbum · 27/06/2023 08:13

Plant based yoghurt with fruit? If lactose is the issue proper greek yoghurt largely is lactose free due to the straining process.

Whataretheodds · 27/06/2023 08:21

Are you struggling with lactose?

Eggs - boiled, poached, scrambled, mini fritters (baked in a fairy cake tin)

Tofu scramble or pre-prepared grilled or airfried tofu chunks/slices. With tomato and cucumber.

Smoothie with spinach, couple of berries, and a plant alternative milk

Porridge made with water, with a ant- based yoghurt.

Dukan pancakes made with plant-based yoghurt.

I’ve tried lactose free options and still giving me issues so I’ve gone completely dairy free. Just spent this evening with my head the toilet being sick, bloated and awful bowel movements. I had a blood test confirming a dairy allergy but had high hopes for lactose free 😣😥

@DisforDarkChocolate sorry I wasn’t clear it’s due to an allergy and I miss cheese

I might try eggs tomorrow morning if I get time!

I like oat milk and coconut based yoghurt. Oatly and Coconut Collaborative do a great selection of products

sashh · 28/06/2023 02:55

You can always boil eggs the day before and eat them cold for breakfast.

Sorry I somehow missed you are cutting out dairy, not sure how.

There was a fad in the 1980s for pouring orange juice over cereal instead of milk - it might be worth giving it a try.

Bacon cooks in 10 mins in the oven, because it is cured you can put it in the oven the night before and just turn the dial when you get up.

Porridge with water is fine, you could add some creamed coconut or cinnamon.

I sometimes have fish, kedgeree if I'm cooking for a few, salmon or tinned fish. I now it sounds odd but it is common in some countries. Kippers, if you get in a plastic pack with butter stick the packet in a jug and add boiling water, leave for 5-10 mins.

In warmer climes it isn't uncommon to have what we think of as salad, tomatoes, cucumber, olives.

If you don't mind me having a bit of a brag, I run 'the happy place' café on here, it's a virtual café but I try to do a range of breakfasts from around the world, you might get some ideas.

@sashh brag away! I can always do with some inspiration and changing most things to dairy free is easy (even I do hate vegan cheese and completely annoyed as I love a good cheese)

Porridge made with water. I thought it would be rubbish but it is nicer.
