Asda Delivery - No Eggs.

Dd is a fussy eater. She's on a school trip tomorrow. While ordering my online shop I saw you could buy pre made sandwiches. I ordered an egg and cress for her.

I also ordered 12 eggs. Have Asda completely ran out? Surely any other brand would do? Even a box of 6 is better than 0. I didn't tick don't substitute.

I know there are other things to get worked up about but I order online for a reason and I'm having a shit time at the minute.

Interestingly, the has never been egg shortages in our local independent shops- not even during lockdowns when there were often none in the shops.
We are rural with several large egg "farms" nearby and they continued to supply the local butchers, greengrocers, corner shops etc with undisrupted supply.
Op, do you have local egg sellers nearby? Maybe you could find some there x

Lidl always had eggs, but there's a restriction to how many boxes you can buy in one shop.

Perhaps others are buying more than they need for fear of running out.

Our Lidl hasn't had them for months, there is a two box limit. Buying more than you need isn't going to have an impact for months unless people get used to eating more eggs and keep buying week after week.

I buy locally when I can, and directly from the roadside where possible

What's the deal with egg shortage- it's been going on for ages is it bird flu related?

Yes.

Hens are being kept inside which means they cannot be sold as 'free range' even though they are the same birds, kept in the same good conditions just temporarily inside.

Supermarkets are not going to pay extra so farmers are not replacing birds.

Hmmph · 27/06/2023 08:01

I have noticed the local Waitrose always has eggs and Asda rarely has eggs. Waitrose do claim to pay farmers properly (which is why I shop there) so maybe that's it.

Local shops often have items that supermarkets don't, so maybe you could pop in there?

They haven't had boxes of 12 medium free range eggs in my local Lidl for months. Plenty of boxes of 6 - but of course 2 boxes of 6 are more expensive than 1 box of 12. Does your supermarket have a policy of not charging extra for substitutions? If so, that may be why they didn't give you 2 boxes of 6 instead?

Egg producers are leaving the industry because of the price of grain, among other factors.

We have chickens the cost of food, bedding etc has risen. 3 years ago bag of chicken feed was £9.60 now £13.10. One of the biggest local suppliers near me sold up.

It's the picker. I ordered organic eggs once and they did not sub it. I told the driver surely they had eggs of some sort (they did, as I had to go to the store to buy them).
Sometimes they sub with the weirdest stuff, other times they can't be bothered to even try.
Complain, maybe it will get put in the training or something.

birdsongismyfave · 28/06/2023 04:40

Hens haven't had to be kept inside since April so you can get free range eggs. I sell mine from the roadside.

Farmers keep flocks of laying hens on 18 month cycles after which they are less profitable so they cull them and order more chicks. Profit margins are extremely thin because of the pressure supermarkets put on pricing.

Lots of farmers have ordered less hens for this year's flocks or decided to quit and get out of the business altogether after losing badly during bird flu, watching their colleagues do so, coming under increasing financial and emotional pressure as a result and had more pressure on cost from the supermarkets.

Our local Co-op always has eggs, whereas other supermarkets around here don’t.
