How much growing room do you want in school uniform?

The 5-6 really fits perfectly and the 6-7 is just a wee bit big but then my mum said to buy the 7-8 to last him the year!

TBF DH is very tall and DS looks to be taking after him.

For wearing in September? Not the 5-6!
Id probably go for the 6-7.

I think jumpers & polo shirts look fine when oversized.

CMOTDibbler · 26/06/2023 12:56

I'd buy 7-8 myself. My ds always grew like a weed over the summer.

For August (Scotland). He just seems to be sprouting recently.

I’d def get the 6-7. My Dm was always the same, wanting miles-too-big things to grow into.

When coming once from the Middle East in the depths of a U.K. winter, when dds were 3 and 6, I asked DM to buy them warm coats - and did stress that they were standard sizes, so coats labelled ages 3 and 6 would be fine.

She met us at the airport with ages 6 and 9 coats - ‘I thought the smaller ones would be skimpy.’ 😩
Had to stop at BHS on the way to DPs’ house, to change them.

I'd always size up especially for younger ones. They're going to grow anyway and it's much easier for them to manage dressing themselves in roomier clothes.

dunloptardis · 26/06/2023 13:09

I think I'll buy some 7-8 and see just how big it looks on him. I know the baggy look is in but don't want him to look ridiculous!

I aim for just slightly on the big side when first bought so I'd go 6-7. I wouldn't want to be going around in massive baggy clothes so I don't make my children do it either. My mum is exactly the same with buying things miles too big, and my MIL is the opposite, buying their exact age when they are tall children. I've always bought the next size up as well so that I've got it in reserve ready for growth spurts which can happen at unpredictable times, and not necessarily just always move up a size in August. It's been very useful because our uniform is a more unusual colour which is not as easy to buy in the shops and needs to be ordered online.

BelindaBears · 26/06/2023 13:11

Provided it’s not really expensive uniform I’d go for the 6-7.

WellLetsSayHesSquare · 26/06/2023 13:13

Buy 6-7 and 7-8 then you already have the bigger size when he grows. I always buy extra polo shirts as they get grubby quickly and like to have a couple new ones saved for picture day/ concerts etc...

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 26/06/2023 13:15

Mine always grows over the summer holidays, all that vitamin D and eating me out of house n home I assume, so I wait till August to buy. Do you need to order it now or could you wait a few weeks?

If you have to buy now then I'd err on the side of growing room and get the bigger size.

born2runaway · 26/06/2023 13:35

Id go 6-7

I bought 5-6 for my reception year kid (started September 22). Already grown out of the uniform so had to re-buy

But the other factor is that they look like crap and have taken a hammering so they're only really weatable for one school year

The winter greys still look ok but summer dress, shirts, jumper look terrible already 🫣

Plenty of stains so it's unlikely you'll get longer use out of the 7-8 size
