Why Do You Live Where You Live?

Just thinking about how different my life might have been if I'd have continued my original plan of

  • go the uni I went to as it was the best in the country for the course
  • move to big city back close to where I grew up after graduating as most of my friends from home were there and it was an area I knew

Instead I got involved in a project in my last year of uni that I wanted to spend a bit more time on after graduating and whilst dithering about plans, met the person who I then spent 10 years and had 2 kids with

Now can't move as kids in school and kids dad is here and he sees them regularly, wouldn't want to change that but still in the university city I moved to for "only 3 years" 17 years later!

So why do you live where you do? Was it your first choice always?

Born and brought up in this area. I originally married a local boy - and then after divorce stayed for the sake of the DC as their father and GPs were all close. Now remarried to someone from another country. I like it here, but am hoping to perhaps retire somewhere else.

I moved for work - same company but different type of work and clients when I made the move nearly 18 years ago. It absolutely wasn’t where I’d ever planned to live but now (aside the property prices) I’d find it hard to move anywhere else.

The place we live is convenient as it’s where DP works, commuting distance of my work, and near both of our parents. But we aren’t particularly attached to it as a location and are thinking of moving somewhere else maybe next year (depending on the mortgage situation). DP is job hunting with no geographical limits and my work has recently opened more offices around the country, or I could quit and work elsewhere if he found something internationally. We don’t have DC yet and our house would sell quickly so aren’t particularly tied down.

I live in a small town just outside the city where I grew up. I also lived in two other cities including London which I miss every day!

I grew up in London, moved away for uni, then moved back to London when I became a single parent. Stayed as I got a council flat in a great location in zone 1 and later lots of funding support for my autistic ds. I've just moved to a different bit of London to be closer to my dds school. I really like it here, and wouldn't want to live anywhere else in the UK. But I would have liked the opportunity to live in other countries.

Close to my parent's house! We looked at a few options, but glad we chose to live nearby to them. They get to see their GCs and it's ideal for emergency childcare too.
