Sunscreen for very fair skin

Elisheva · 24/06/2023 18:39

My DS16 has white blond hair and very fair skin that doesn’t tan. I am struggling to find a suncream that protects him for longer than an hour or so. When he goes out for the day he puts it on before he leaves and reapplies at lunchtime but he’s still burning. He always wears a hat which helps a bit as his hair provides no protection at all!
He has point blank refused to use the coloured zinc sun block that cricketers use. I also think it’s unrealistic to believe that he will apply the suncream more frequently.
Is the P20 all day worth the money? I thought maybe an all day one reapplied at lunch time might help? Any other ideas?

I find the dry mist sprays stay put and protect my fair skin all day. Bonus that they don't feel like sun screen.

He needs to keep out of the sun I think. I'm v pale and can do no more than an hour even with factor 50. Always wear a factor 50 hat, spf sleeves etc. I couldn't do a job or have a lifestyle where I had to be in direct sunlight without long sleeved clothes and all the above.

Worth giving the ultrasun spf 50 extreme a go. It's made for people with very very pale skin or sun allergy and is long lasting. Use it for my fair DD and she has never burnt.

Ultrasun extreme factor 50 is what I use when it's this kind of weather. But mainly I just don't go out until it's cool or I wear loose long sleeve natural fabrics (although technically you should still wear sunscreen underneath)

I have red hair and burn very easily.

I use Boots Soltan factor 50+. Find it very effective.

I use the Neutrogena range and I am amazed how much better they are than what I was using before

I am using their 70 SPF creams and my skin isn't burning at all

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 70, 3 Ounce amzn.eu/d/fVidki9

Neutrogena Sport Face SPF#70+ 73 ml Tube amzn.eu/d/0dEeb0A

If properly applied (on clean dry skin, ideally just after a shower, and then let it dry for 10 minutes before getting dressed) p20 really does last all day no matter what you do, and is very cost effective. We usually buy it in Savers as they do good deals

Thanks, I will give these a go. He’s not a sun worshipper at all, but his hobby means that he’s often outside for a good portion of the day. I don’t mind spending a bit more if it’s going to work.

My daughter literally reflects the sun, she is so pale. Everyone comments on her pallor. She uses Factor 50 Ambre Solaire dry mist, wears long loose sleeves, long loose trousers and a hat with a brim. On her face she wears Unseen Screen factor 50 and one of those sunscreen lip balm things. And she doesn't come out between about noon and 4pm.

LolaSmiles · 24/06/2023 19:32

I'm another fan of ultrasun factor 50. It doesn't budge if put on at the start of the day. I'm always worried I've missed a bit and will have a hideous and painful red patch so tend to apply around mid day if the UV is especially high.

Phillipa12 · 24/06/2023 19:34

I have only ever used P20 on my dc, red heads with pale skin. I apply it to my boys in the morning and it does last all day, if they swim I do apply it after. They have never burnt.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/06/2023 19:38

Ultrasun works if applied carefully, but those of us who are exceptionally fair really need to avoid harsh sun, especially in the middle of the day. It's a pain in the bum, but we really weren't made for it.

Iizzyb · 24/06/2023 19:38

Calypso is very good too - Broad spectrum and all day - comes from b&m or home bargains - recommended by. a dermatologist friend of a friend (we both have red head sons)

thinkfast · 24/06/2023 20:32

P.20 lasts all day. My parents love it...but...
It stains fabric
It takes ages to dry
It's only factor 20
If you miss a bit. That but will burn
It's fucking agony for hours if you get any in your eyes

I liked boots soltan facto 50

WildFlowerBees · 24/06/2023 20:34

Ultraviolette all of their sunscreens are brilliant. Australian brand so you can be assured it's good. I use the Supreme screen and never have any issues.

Nothing less than 50+
you need much more than most people use. A bottle should not last long.

hats and spf clothing are also useful

really, waiting to lunch to reapply is likely not realistic if he burns easily

This is by far the best sunscreen i’ve come across (very pale, red hair, burn in the slightest sun & have been burnt many times over the years) i’ve never tested the 8hr one as i apply every couple of hours. Wearing that & a hat (but shorts & tshirts) meant me & my kids didn’t burn even when we were at a theme park last year when it was 38. Maybe the 8hr he’d get a bit longer but my kids know to apply theirs in school & although they moan they know it goes on numerous times when out. I’ve tried more expensive brands but this is the best one i’ve found
