Help - washing machine backed up into sink and kitchen flooded

I'm just looking for advice - my washing machine has just finished, and it's backed up into the sink so much that the sink is full and the floor flooded.
It's a council property but I'm not sure if they help with this sort of thing (I'm disabled so they do some of the repairs other tenants have to do themselves, but I don't know if they cover this).

Who do I call please? (any ideas welcome)

The sink isn't draining either.

Give the council a ring and see if they can help, sounds like a blockage in the pipe. They probably have an out of hours number. Complete nightmare for you though Flowers

Have you checked they outlet pipe isn't obstructed. This happened to me a couple of days ago and it was because my kids stuck a toy golf ball in the pipe. Knocked it out and all the water drained

FlipFlopFlicker · 24/06/2023 16:24

Have you looked in the bottom door of the washing machine to see if there is anything in there?

Also outside?

MyCatIsAFuckwit · 24/06/2023 16:32

Check the "u" bend under the sink as it sounds as if it is a shared outlet.
Exact same thing happened to me.
I took out the "u" bend (really easy) and found it to be blocked (thanks to my daughter who had put hair grips down there 🙄)

  • Put a big pan/bucket under while doing so to catch the water/debris

If it's come up the kitchen sink, it's got out of the washing machine outlet pipe and into the house plumbing, met a blockage, and been forced towards the sink.

How far apart are the washing machine and the sink? Are other nearby sinks working or also not draining? Have you pulled the washing machine out (careful you don't damage the floor) and looked down the pipe that should have taken the water away to see if you can see anything? Or it may be that the flexi hose on the washing machine goes into the plumbing directly under the sink if they're very close. If there's a u bend on the pipe below where the washing machine hose goes in, you can put a bucket under (put the plug in the sink first, and make it a big bucket if it's a long pipe from the sink to the u bend!) and undo the u bend and see if there's anything blocking it.

The trap might be a bit of pipe literally shaped like a u, or it might be a bottle trap shaped like this. If it's a bottle trap you unscrew the bottom piece.

Thanks all. My carer called the council when she got here and saw it (she insisted on calling as she said I wouldn't tell them how bad it was), and she very kindly mopped the floor and emptied out the cutlery drawer (full of water). And the council came out within half an hour - very amazed and grateful as their website suggests it wasn't an emergency.

Ah, that's good news @SnowyMouse glad it's sorted!

Roselilly36 · 24/06/2023 19:39

I hope it’s all sorted now OP. Do you use washing powder OP? My neighbour had the same thing happen. The powder had chocked up the whole system. She switched to liquid, no further problems.

SnowyMouse · 24/06/2023 19:45

Thanks, me too! I use the liquid pods, sorry your neighbour had the same happen.
