Please can I have any suggestions about what to do in my new bedroom?!

I'm moving shortly to a bungalow. My new bedroom has lovely sliding doors leading out to the garden - but it doesn't have a window.

I like to have my bedroom windows open all year round but I'm a bit wary about sleeping on ground floor level with actual doors open. Any ideas how to get round this please?

I've just realised my thread title could be a bit misleading ... 😁

I did think it was a thread about sex 😂

I was going to suggest having sex....but I do appreciate your predicament! I hate sleeping with the windows closed, but there is no way I'd sleep with sliding doors open. There must be some sort of sliding door /lockable screen on the market that would give you some air but still keep you secure.

There is a sliding door kick lock, that would mean you can lock it slightly open. But you could reach in and press the button to open it.

Assuming the doors lead onto the garden; how secure is your garden? Would you feel better if you made your garden incredibly secure? I’m not sure how maybe fencing toppers, cctv with signs, security lighting.

Is there a chain lock type attachment you can get for sliding doors? Or an external shutter grid (if that’s fire safe). Maybe ask a locksmith?

Or, you know how the fire brigade will come to your home to do fire safety checks, do the police do anything similar?

I think any type of lock you put on the sliding doors to allow them to stay slightly open will not be terribly secure as it will be an addition, not built into the door itself. I think the only thing that would make me feel secure is some sort of lockable grill or screen across the external width of the door which might not look very nice from the outside but would allow you to open the internal sliding door for ventilation..

Mind you, having very loud sex would probably put off most burglars, but the question is whether or not you have the stamina to keep going all night.

You can also cut a wooden thick dowel, like a broom handle, and drop it into the track. So the door won’t slide open more than an inch or two. This depends on if your track is indoor or outdoor though.

Depending on your budget and size of opening, could you replace (one or both of) the patio doors with windows? Wouldn't necessarily need anything structural, you could have either a solid panel in the bottom or fixed pane glass lower half, opener (with or without fan light) top half? Might not cost as much as you think? I've had success getting ex display windows and doors off eBay and changed the locks - still need someone to fit it through.

Or, could you have a velux fitted? That probably would cost as much as you think 😅 but I had one done recently and I loooooove it. Constant airflow and idiot dog can't get out of it, win-win

Thanks so much for the suggestions.

The garden is relatively secure but not impregnable. Not secure enough for me to sleep soundly with the doors open.

Maybe if I ask both the police and fire service round for safety advice, I can kill 2 birds with 1 stone as it were ... :)
