Year 2 SATS scores… Help!!

Can anyone explain Y2 SATS scores to me please?

My child has scored:

115 in reading - down as achieving above National expectation
104 in grammar, punctuation and spelling - achieving national expectations
115 in maths - achieving national expectations.

What exactly is the bracket for achieving national expectations and then above national expectations? I notice her maths score is the same as the reading score, yet one is above and one isn’t?

Im also wondering about the 104 score. I’m wondering if that’s quite low in the expected bracket.

Any info or advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Unless it’s changed since mine did them 100 is the expected level.

104 is good but not above expectations. 115 is pretty much as high as you can get and is above expectation. But I suspect you may know that already.

100 is the scaled score for meeting the expected standard. 104 will be quite a few marks above that so nothing to worry about. 110 -115 is working at greater depth so it's unusual to see the maths score not saying that. However, it might be that they've combined it with teacher assessment and don't feel they are quite there for greater depth. Just ask the teacher to clarify. 115 is the too scaled score so your child is doing amazingly. They either scored full marks or very close to it.

Thanks for the replies. Yes it was the 2 scores being the same but falling in different categories that threw me off. I have a very limited knowledge of the English system.

It sounds like your child did well in the tests for maths but the teacher felt they were not secure enough in maths to give the greater depth judgement. They will be a very secure expected though I'd have thought.
104 in spag is fine, (this test is actually optional as they all will be next year) but is meant to help the teacher come to their judgement for the writing assessment.

Thank you @Popfan. My child is quite young in their year group also, so I’m delighted that they seem to be doing well. I even considered holding back a year, so I’m glad I didn’t.

I’m a Y2 teacher and made this call for some of my pupils this year. You could have two pupils who score 115 but one may be awarded expected and the other greater depth. It depends in maths, on their ability to apply knowledge to problem solving questions set in different contexts. A child given expected with a score of 115 by me for example was strong on written calculations and mental arithmetic but struggled with two step problems and using what they already knew to work out new number facts.
The difference with reading is that once you can read fluently and with understanding, all you really need to do for greater depth is to be able to compare books and their themes/ messages.
