How much do you think this would cost? Food for family celebration.

Having a small family gathering for a special occasion. There will be about 14 adults all meat eaters. One family member is taking care of the food and I would like to cover the cost but I can't ask her outright how much she is spending as she won't tell me (very proud)!!!

We are having a homemade iced celebration cake, gammon joint, chicken tikka, new potatoes, coleslaw and salads, a fresh fruit platter (melon, mango, strawberries, pineapple, kiwi, grapes) and a cheeseboard.

How much do you reckon???

Try putting it in a tesco online basket and seeing the total. Guessing £150??

RandomMess · 23/06/2023 20:48

Yeah £10 per head would be easy to spend

Put £150+ in an envelope and say he's a contribution towards your costs?

RandomMess · 23/06/2023 20:49

Cake cost could well be a lot on its own tbh plus the fresh fruit.

I estimate the whole lot is costing her £300

Lordofmyflies · 23/06/2023 21:00

I’d say £250-300. A decent size gammon for 15 people would be around £60 I’d have thought?

SirenSays · 23/06/2023 21:04

Depends on the cake. A Betty crocker mix vs a huge layered cake lots of expensive butter or chocolate

NoSquirrels · 23/06/2023 21:04

If they want to pay (because they’re proud) and you also want to pay, then anything you give will be hard to have accepted, no? And also anything you manage to get them to accept will be appreciated towards it. So I’d go with £100 and bringing some extra treats - sparkling wine and soft drinks, chocolates etc.

Riverlee · 23/06/2023 21:14

Difficult to say, because depends on quality of food etc. However, I’d say £150-250.

I know their bank details and was planning to do a discreet transfer. I know they are finding things tough financially at the moment due to some unforeseen events.
The cake will be a sponge cake with jam and butter cream inside covered with fondant icing........quite large about the size of an A4 sheet of paper.

They are a very good cook, everything will be homemade, the chicken tikka, coleslaw and all of the salad. They tend to shop in Aldi.

No more than £150 if shopping in Aldi. I don’t think it would even cost £100

LidlOrAldi · 23/06/2023 21:28

Thanks, I will transfer £100 and take some fizz along too.

I think it will probably be about £150, fruit and cheese are all expensive now

icanflysometimes · 23/06/2023 22:16

I'd say £150 minimum, even making it at home. If a lot of cheese and a variety of salads, I'd give £200.
