Which job...or stay where I am?

A fortunate situation to be in, I have a job I quite like but am a bit bored in and have been offered 2 others:

Current job. Senior management position, team of 20, loads of balls to juggle, interesting and meaningful work. I've developed and trained a really good team and frankly it runs itself these days and I have little to do. Really supportive leadership team of which I am part. Reasonable pay but I'm top of my scale. Very short commute, term time only, so long holidays but no flexibility. My children are now adults and being tied to school holidays can be a pain - no long weekends for example.

Job 1 - Working for the local authority, very similar job in terms of responsibilities as currently, but this is a new post for me to set up (as current one was when I started). About 10% payrise FTE but as current role is PT (don't get paid for all holidays) is a substantial increase. Standard holiday allocation. Commute c. 30 min by car, but parking tricky and expensive. More money is always nice, but I don't "need" it.

Job 2 - Three days a week. Significant increase in FTE salary that means I'll only be very slightly worse off for going to 3 days. Duties similar to currently, but much smaller team. Employer is a fairly new and small charity. Funded by the LA, but no guarantees that will continue. I'm about 3 years away from retirement (if I go early, which I could afford to) so I only need the job to last 3 years. An hour commute by train, but possibility for wfh at least one of the 3 days. Generous holidays, not quite as good as currently, but also much more flexibility. I can afford to take the hit on pay for the benefit of a 3 day week.

I'm veering towards the PT one...

Rather than go to 3 days for much the same money?

I'm thinking I'll probably go on longer than 3 days of it's PT (and the charity doesn't fold). There's no realistic possibility of going to 3 days where I am and even if there was it would be a big paycut

I also don't want to be one of those people who's just marking time to retirement.

PT one sounds really tempting. Do you enjoy reading books/listening to podcasts to fill your commute? How expensive is the train commute? Can you get it confirmed whether you can WFH? Do you have the desire to start a new role?
I think going PT would be a good way to transition towards retirement.

no i'd find an exciting hobby to do after work
for 3 years id prefer the devil I know

Can you change your hours in existing job, from term time only to reduced weekly, or indeed even increase them ?

goodkidsmaadhouse · 23/06/2023 17:17

Your update makes it sound like you really want to go for the PT one. I definitely wouldn’t take the new FT option. Either stay where you are or take the PT. Do you mind the commute?

No. Definitely no possibility of taking holidays in term time.

Oh I'd definitely go for the PT role. That sounds ideal.

dubyalass · 23/06/2023 17:19

I'd be tempted by job 2. I see no point in marking time; I'd much rather be interested and engaged in what I'm doing. Personally I would love to drop a day a week and if it didn't make a significant difference financially I would go for it. However I have another 20+ years to go and therefore dropping a day would have an impact on pension contributions unless I can find better paid work. If it wouldn't really impact your pension then again, I'd go for it.

I'm bored in my current job and do need a new challenge. 3 years is a long time to be bored/have no sense of achievement IMO

There's definitely the ability to wfh, if I have a concern it's that there might be too much wfh and I might not like that.

Yes, a few hours a week with nothing to do but read sounds like bliss 😆

I'd go for job 2. More money and less hours. The commute doesn't sound too bad.

Job 2
