Neighbours bloody cat!

Bemyclementine · 23/06/2023 11:39

I'll start by saying I love cats. I have 2 currently. A neighbour has 6. I think. They seem to get some, lose some...

One of their old ones basically comes to my house to sleep. It's very old and can no longer scale the house to get in through their window. Also, they now have 2 youbd nake unneutered cats and i think he wants to get away from them. I dont feed him on purpose but can't deny he does pinch biscuits if I'm not on the ball.

One of the young male cats keeps coming in. Today I got home and could smell cat wee. Walked in and it ran down the stairs

Htf do I keep it out? I've just put a New cat flap in, I've read bad reviews about the microchip ones and visiting cat of course doesn't have one

We have a microchip cat flat, it's been a game changer and we've never had any problems? The instructions suggest using it as a 'normal' cat flap first, to get your cat used to it, and once puss is happy, you can then add the batteries and it becomes selective.

My kitchen started to become a cafeteria for local cats, but not any more!

BigShoutyRaven · 23/06/2023 11:47

I have a microchip cat flap with a camera trained on it. Last night alone 2 not-my-cats tried to get in. They do work. And also if someone gets in that shouldn't, it will let them out.

Bemyclementine · 23/06/2023 11:49

OK, I was looking at different options when getting the new cat flap, and read bad reviews about batteries, and the locking mechanism not being strong enough for determined cats.

I also worry about nice elderly not my cat.

I don't have a camera, but I mainly WFH these days, often in the kitchen/diner and a lot of non-resident cats have tried their luck, making me wonder just how many visitors we used to get!

Even if it’s not true surely it’s better to have one than not have one at all? Confused

Bemyclementine · 23/06/2023 14:36

I decided to go with just a standard cat flap based on what I'd read . The 2 boy cats chase my 2 girl cats and they often cone flying in through the cat flap, I wouldn't want them getting locked out.

I hope that sorts it out OP - I have a similar issue in that I have 2 very shy neutered male cats who are bullied relentlessly buy an aggressive tom cat that sprays up the back doorframe every night - the smell as the sun hits it is horrendous!
who are these irresponsible cat owners that don’t bother to neuter.

Luckingfovely · 23/06/2023 15:36

I'm not sure what you read about the microchip cat flap but it's brilliant. I can't imagine why you wouldn't have one if you live in an area with other cats.

Callistamon62 · 23/06/2023 15:47

I have a microchip cat flap.it has been well worth the money. If you put rechargeable batteries in they don't last long, but ordinary batteries last about 6 months, I have 3 cats. We are on our 3rd plastic thing that you turn to alter the flap to in only or out only etc, but the company have replaced the knob thingy each time for free and it's comes in a day or two. I would recommend one for sure.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 23/06/2023 15:50

My cats loved the ‘automatic’ cat flap. One in particular used to sit beside it, leaning over until she heard it click, and then sitting back. Wore the batteries out more quickly, but hours of harmless fun.

80sMum · 23/06/2023 16:04

You need to give the boy cats a horrible experience the next time they enter your home, so they are put off from returning. I would suggest lots of water and loud noises. Lock the cat flap to "in only" so the cat can't easily escape once inside.

I was able to stop our neighbours' bullying beast of a male cat from coming in through our cat flap and eating our cat's food and generally frightening her.
I used two metal saucepan lids, a metal tablespoon and a garden sprayer bottle filled with water.

I waited for the cat to come in (it was predictable, as always came in when our cat had just been fed). I then entered the room and shut the door. Cat saw me and tried to run out through the flap, but found it locked. Cat was then liberally sprayed with water, while it tried to get out of the room.

I then made very loud noises with the metal lids and spoon and chased it around the room, shouting and banging.

Poor thing was obviously terrified and desperate to get out. Eventually, I opened the back door and it shot out at high speed. It never came back.

After that, I used to see it sitting on next door's garage roof, peering into our garden, but I never saw it in our garden again and it never came anywhere near the house.

Bemyclementine · 23/06/2023 20:09

@80sMum I think I'll be trying that, I really don't want to lock the elderly cat out. I'll wait til I have a day at home.

Maybe a silly suggestion, so by all means say no, but couldn't you get a microchip cat flap and also have the elderly cat on it as well as your cats? Then he can still pop round for a bit of peace but the others can't join him? I have a microchip cat flap and it's brilliant. Had real problems before that though with the neighbours cats.

Amillionlovesongslater · 23/06/2023 20:52

My MIL has a cat doorbell 😂
No cat flap but when her cat is at the back door it sets of a sensor and rings like a doorbell in the house to let her know.

Bemyclementine · 23/06/2023 23:08

@Sids81 elderly cat won't be chipped. Wibu to chip him? Probably I think

That is truly fabulous!

Sids81 · 24/06/2023 10:08

Ah if the older cat isn't chipped that doesn't help. Although you can get cat flaps that work on little "charms" that you put on the cats collar. So maybe that's an option for your cats and the elder as long as they all wear collars (mine don't though as they take them off!)

onthefence23 · 24/06/2023 11:08

We've had a microchip one for 8 years and it's been ace, we've replaced the batteries a few other times but no other issues

RelativePitch · 24/06/2023 12:06

Love our microchip cat flap. It has a light that flashes red when battery is running low. I've had it three years and only changed batteries twice. Not only does it stop unwanted interlopers, it also protects cats who might be on a special diet and shouldn't be eating our cat's food. Those rants appear fairly often on our Local FB groups!

SiblingFights · 24/06/2023 12:11

We've not had issues with our microchip flap. I've seen several cats looking confused that they can't get in our flap, so I'm sure we would have had lots of unwanted visitors without it.
