What Footwear for DS to go with suit for prom??

Any recommendations for footwear to go with a suit for prom for ds1? Some of his mates are going with Nike trainers. He’s not keen on that and wants to look a bit smarter, but isn’t too keen on super formal men’s shoes either. Just wondering what footwear your sons might have worn / be wearing for prom or maybe summer weddings with a suit? TIA.

Maybe some plain converse?

My son has his prom tonight and is wearing box-fresh white pumps/trainers with a pale blue suit.

Something that does not involve spending money.

When mine did these they got ones that would then double as shoes for job interviews. Same with suits, we purchased for each with that in mind as opposed to hiring for the night. They all went to uni but useful for internship interviews here and there, formal funerals etc. So, basically decent quality navy suits with formal black shoes😝.

Red Converse low tops.

My ds insisted on wearing polished Oxfords. He is such a disappointment to me!

My DS wore Clarks desert boots in blue suede. He's worn them a lot since in sixth form

Changes17 · 23/06/2023 12:49

DS has some desert boot type shoes.

School shoes ?

Changes17 · 23/06/2023 12:50

@HoppingPavlova Did buying a prom suit that would be good for interviews later work? Did they still fit? I've assumed they wouldn't..

Changes17 · 23/06/2023 12:51

But yes, would have been school shoes if they were in any fit state.

My son wore black leather mens shoes. He's worn them for a funeral since and a wedding and will be good for interviews/work.ehen the time comes. His feet have stopped growing and all men need one good quality pair of black shoes for formal wear.

My son had a nice suit from M&S and it still fits him. I think he's stopped growing.

Eldest DS got a suit for prom at 18, he's 22 now and it wouldn't be wearable. Probably wasn't wearable even a year after. He's taller and filled out a lot. He wore it with smart shoes, the shoes are fine and still fit, he was able to wear them with the new suit he got for Uni graduation. Younger DS wore a kilt (hired) and what he wore at 18 definitely wouldn't fit him now. We donated eldest DSs suit to the school who now run a prom bank of donated suits/shirts and dresses to make sure that all the DC get a chance to dress up.

I know no-one has money to waste really, but it does make me sad that for boys people expect them to get just get something practical that they can wear again but for girls there is the expectation that as far as finances allow, they will pick a dream dress (and shoes and bag and hair, make-up, nails, spray tan etc) with no expectation that they should pick something that they can wear again.

This makes me sad full stop

Yes. Keep in mind though that I was mainly referring to interviews during uni years, not interviews post graduation. Although, one of mine still wears his formal suit now, 7 years on! The others don’t, they outgrew, but they did get wear out of them for interviews during the early uni years (one probably got 4 years, as they did 2 degrees back to back and I recall it still fitted around that point but not at the end, so that’s not bad).

For those saying it’s unfair on boys, as girls gave one year only, not our experience. DD chose a dress for another function that she could subsequently wear as a formal/prom dress and then for other special occasions subsequently. She still had it and it makes an appearance roughly once every two years. If you buy quality pieces to last, people can get a lot of use out of them.

I was being naively smug about this with my eldest.
Sadly, when he came to put it on 8 weeks after prom, it was far too small Grin

Ho hum, he luckily got one prom, one funeral and one wedding out of it in the space of about 6 weeks. However, that growth spurt was big.

MarigoldGlove · 23/06/2023 16:20

I was in Morrisons this morning and the lady on the check out was telling me she's spent £650 on her dd. £450 on the dress alone.

It made me panic as DD's was £40.

Changes17 · 23/06/2023 16:43

That’s mad. DS’s was from eBay and I expect it will go back on there afterwards.

Assignedtoworryyourmother · 23/06/2023 16:49

DD had her prom in May and wore a trouser suit and red converse. Only money I had to spend was for her to have a nose piercing.

whiteroseredrose · 23/06/2023 17:41

DS wore his school shoes and a rented DJ to Y11 prom. DD wore a TKMaxx dress and expensive shoes to hers. She has worn both dress and shoes a lot since.
