Manager thinks I'm not qualified enough to apply for a managers position

So here's the situation
I started a new job end of April
There was an assistant manager and a general manager

Assistant Manager did not pass probation. I let the GM know I was very interested in stepping up.
Someone else within the team phoned the area manager and said they wanted the job (after hearing me speak with the area manager about how keen I was, might be slightly bitter but anyway)

General manager gets dismissed after something from her past passed up so Assistant manager is now acting as GM.

After 4 weeks of recruiting, they've not had 1 single applicant.
So I messaged acting GM today (as advised on the internal recruitment page)
(I have 5 years management experience, always shown up for my shifts, stayed later when needed, I've been left by myself for most of the day, hitting targets etc etc)
And came back with "I feel this role requires someone with more experience"

Is it worth trying to convince her I'm a good fit or just leave it be? They are getting desperate as they are having to locate staff from other places so she can get a day off, I just feel like acting GM does not want me in a professional role in the work place at all 😅 but I've got the previous experience and we've all got to start somewhere right?

You've hardly been there very long, so I think you should focus on doing a good job in your current role. They obviously don't think you're ready

What is your current role, and how many steps are there between you and the job you've been rejected for? And if there's only 40p increase in wages for a lot more work, and you've only been in your current role since April, its probably worth staying in your current role for the time being and not having the extra learning and responsibilities given you're presumably still learning the specifics of your current job even if you have done similar roles elsewhere.

If the current assistant manager was at the same level as you just recently and is now acting general manager, she's been given a lot of new responsibilities in a short space of time and quite possibly feels like she's in over her head. She's only acting general manager at the moment which means her own position isn't secure.

Are they looking for a permanent general manager? Why is she only acting general manager?

My guess is that she's worried that if you take on the assistant manager's role you might turn out to be better at the job than she is. Or, they recruit a permanent general manager, she gets bumped back down to her official role, and there are then two of you scrapping over the same assistant manager's job.

If you don't need her support to go for the job then you could go for it anyway, but my feeling is that she sees you as a threat to her own job, and a line manager who sees you as a threat is never going to have your career progression at heart, so you may end up moving on before too long anyway.

Sorry just caught up
So there is General manager
Deputy manager
Then me
Two other people who do the same job (but are on borrowed time) because they've not turned up, not phoning in as to why, late and rude

So there is only one position above me, there's no other position to jump in to for more experience before manager.

I did also say she could stay as general manager and I could go for the deputy managers position instead but no that idea was vetoed.
Yes they want a permanent general manager

I would argue that although I haven't been there long, I have more experience in the place than someone whose never worked for the company before. Which can sometimes be quicker than training someone else up

I feel shafted in all honesty. This is the second time I've tried to go for the managers position and they just don't want me. Obviously they don't think I'm ready but it'd be nice if they explained why, gave me things I could work on to improve instead of a blanket no

I would apply for other positions elsewhere. They either don’t want to re recruit for your role, or maybe it’s a personality clash etc. Or maybe they are worried you will get it on your cv and leave. Some companies hate recruiting internally.

I would rewrite my CV and find a new job that values your skills and let them recruit for two roles.

Is this hospitality? If so there must be loads of vacancies.

I don't want to leave because they are short staffed that's their problem.
