To stop me going for wine? Wine is ruining my diet! But I love nursing a glass after dinner. So I need something that feels like a treat and I can look forward to. I can't find anything that hits the spot. Help!

If you particularly like sweet drinks then I'd agree with bitters or pressed citrus with tonic. I also make kombucha which works well as you can make whatever flavours you like with fruits, spices or herbs.

For cold drinks in Summer I also make mixed herb teas in jugs and drink them from the fridge - again you can add lemon or ice.

These all have the complexity you get from many alcoholic drinks which is what I find missing from most juices and soft drinks.

I do like kombucha. How do you make it? Agree I lean more towards the less sweet stuff. Some amazing ideas here, thanks so much everyone

Dash is really nice, refreshing but not really sweet. I like cawstons press as well their rhubarb one is so nice (but sweet!)
The Robinsons fruit fusions squash is nice, also a fan of aqua libre, the san pelligrino fruit drinks and Purdeys

I sometimes make iced green tea, with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice and some mint leaves, or use the flavoured green teas, plenty of ice and it tastes so refreshing.

Its easy to make but you need a scoby and its easiest if you have a fermenting jar with a tap but any large sealable container will do. I have a couple of large jars and cycle them so that one is fermenting and the other is ready.

You make tea (I use green), steep it for a few mins. Cool, add a small amount of sugar for the fermentation and let the scoby do the job. Mine typically takes a few days in the jar and then I decant into bottles which is where you add the fruit/herbs/flavourings if desired.

There are lots of guides and recipes online but its really easy to do. I was also given this book which has lots of ideas for beginners.

Be prepared for a few hits and misses when you start as you work out how strong you want your tea and how long you like it fermented. I don't like the tea too strong and I like the ferment fairly tart but you may prefer it sweeter. If you have a friend who makes kombucha they can probably cut a chunk of a scoby for you - it grows over time, like a tribble :-)

Thanks to those who suggested the dash/aqua libre style drinks.

By this time on a Friday I am normally fully wined up, but i has a nice glass after a stupid long day, and then a can of ‘LOVEAU’ infused with watermelon. I put it with strawberries and ice and it’s been a pretty solid substitute. 🥰
