Does anyone have bone broth regularly and if so what benefits have you seen?

also, what bones do you use for your broth? Thanks!

It's not on published papers. It's videos of women that documented it. They got recommended it, to do it.

Ah, I see.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 21/06/2023 22:45

What exactly is bone broth and how do you make it?

I make what I call stock with the carcass of roast chicken and leftover veg (not potatoes) - pressure cooked or slow cooked overnight. Is that bone broth?

i know two people who are bone broth fanatics and they are both anti-vax conspiracy theorists

I've been Googling and apparently the main difference is you simmer the same ingredients much, much longer to get broth. 24-48 hours for chicken, for eg. Optionally ass a very small amount of cider vinegar or white vinegar at the end to dissolve the extremely gelatinous consistency into something drinkable and make the protein and collagen more bioavailable (?)

If your life is serene and organised enough that you can spend time making and drinking bone broth, that is probably why you have a feeling of well-being.

Throwing a bunch of ingredients in a pot and leaving it takes five minutes. It's quicker than a sizzle and leave it soup. Drinking is something we all do all the time.

I love broth and make it regularly. I was brought up on homemade chicken soup, jewish style.

I add a table spoon of cider vinegar at the beginning as it helps to extract the gelatine & flavour from the bones.

I make it and drink/eat it because it's delicous, comforting, nutritious & good for gut health.

I usually have it as a noodle soup with lots of fresh veg.

Whenever I feel run down, or have had a bug weekend, I make sure to have a big bowl of it as I find it extremely restorative.

Almost every cuisine in the world has a version of a soup made with broth... mainly because it's frugal, using every part of the animal, making it go as far as possible but also because it's highly nutritious.

Apple cider vinegar?? Not in mine! That would make it taste disgusting.
I think it's unlikely to help fertility or it would be prescribed on the NHS.
It's not going to do you any harm & as I said above, it's great in soup. It's just boiled bones.
Collagen is released but will be broken down into amino acids in the stomach. These amino acids are useful to build proteins but they can't go to a specific site or help skin etc. There is no research to suggest that they can.

You need some acidity in any stock, bone broth or not, but white wine will do as well.

Oh is that why we glug wine into stock? I thought it was pure embellishment.

I'm hoping someone is going to come along and say they've been drinking/eating bone broth for the past 10 years and have never had a cold since and all their wrinkles have disappeared

There are whole generations that were brought up, and spent most of their lives, eating foods made with home made stock. Sadly, I think you will find the miracle health benefits to have been overstated.

JeandeServiette · 21/06/2023 23:47

TBF, if people have gorgeous digestion thanks to broth, they're probably not charting about it on the bus.

Absolutely. I'm sure it's good healthy stuff, but it's not going to perform a miracle or improve your fertility, no matter what the "experts" on non medical websites tell you. It's a source of protein, vitamins etc.

Recommended by fertility doctors.

I feel the medicines and other treatments administered by those fertility doctors might also have had a teeny tiny bit to do with any successful conceptions that followed. At least bone broth is probably one of the cheapest and most harmless fertility ‘cures’ promoted to struggling women.

I conceived one of my children during a heatwave when I was eating a lot of Magnums. It doesn’t necessarily follow that Magnums must therefore have a positive effect on fertility.
