How many times have you called the police?

Just a thread out of curiosity. I'm middle aged and have found cause to call the police four times in my life so far.

Once for an attempted burglary, once late at night when a woman in the street was screaming for help, and twice for street fights outside my house, when I lived in an unsavoury part of town.

Is that a more or less than average tally for the Mumsnet readership?

Loads, worked in a shop in an area of London with a lot of homeless people - they had a lot of fights, also had loads of tourists asking for help after they’d been pick pocketed.
once 999 when a car drove through the window of a hairdressers opposite my flat (late at night, drunk driver in a stolen car)
once when we were burgled (unlike others experiences they were excellent)

Cherrysoup · 21/06/2023 22:18

Twice. Neighbour punched me in the face (drunk, violent drug user)

Concern for welfare, nice very elderly neighbour’s dog was-unusually-barking overnight. She’d had a stroke and was unable to get up. Police came then called an ambo. She made a very good recovery considering she’d been collapsed overnight.

Twice I think, at least thats all I remember

  1. heard a woman screaming and a man yelling from a house, I was with a friend and we rang the police

  2. driving to work i saw a child walking on a long middle of nowhere road in the pouring rain on a school day

I work night shift in a hotel - I've had to call 999 a fair few times, but more for ambulances than police.

I've called the non emergency police number a few times in my private life, but don't think I've ever had to call as an emergency outside of work.

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 21/06/2023 22:21

Oh wait

  1. my daughter had a nasty experience in a shopping centre and I rang the police to report it in case it had happened before or it happened again
Thepossibility · 21/06/2023 22:38

Once when a man on meth went on a violent rampage at the train station.
It was terrifying when he then sat next to me trying to chat me up while they were asking me questions about him on the phone.

Mindovermatter247 · 21/06/2023 22:43

I’ve never called the police, someone else has al2ays got to it first. I’ve helped them on a few occasions…
I was in a bus accident years ago caused by a woman who was driving on the wrong side of the road and then drove straight into the bus, miraculously no one was seriously injured, but she tried to blame the bus driver.

last year a drunk guy smashed a massive concrete block through the window of the shop opposite, we’d been watching his antics for a few minutes so had witnessed it.

TheUsualChaos · 21/06/2023 22:46

Once and the operator couldn't even put me through to them. If I was in immediate danger I would have been screwed.

PermanentTemporary · 21/06/2023 22:46

Three times. Non-emergency to report dh missing (gone for 5 days). 999 twice in one day when dh was psychotic. They wouldn't come out because they classed it as a mental health issue, and dh died that day.

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 22:47

3 times. When I was burgled, when my car was broken into and when my DS was mugged.

Applecoresweet · 21/06/2023 22:48

I've never called the police.

QueefQueen80s · 21/06/2023 22:50

Never.

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 21/06/2023 22:52

Over 100 to 999
Probably the same again to 101
Mainly concern for welfare reports due to my job role.

MuchTooTired · 21/06/2023 22:54

I’ve called 999 a few times, once for a massive brawl that happened at kicking out time, the next was a building I had just entered was mid being robbed, and the last one was to get some help for a lady who was going to jump off of a bridge onto a busy road.

I’ve called the non emergency plenty of times, I can’t remember them all.

Harperwillow · 21/06/2023 22:57

I’m 36 have called the police when a gang of teenagers broke into my close and were drinking / taking drugs - I was scared to leave the flat and was home alone. They never came out .
Second time I Called a man to find out why he didn’t turn up for his appointment and he was going to kill himself - I stayed on the phone talking to him and used the landline to call the police to get him help .
Last time was to report children playing on the motorway .

justanothermummma · 21/06/2023 23:13

Once, saw an accident on the motorway in front of me last year.

Ambulance also once, elderly neighbour had a fall, my Mum went to help and asked me to call, I was 12.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/06/2023 23:23

Once. I spoke to 101 regarding a vulnerable at risk person who later went missing.

I attended a police station once due to wanting to take some advice regarding a stranger behaving oddly towards me repeatedly

That's it

thaegumathteth · 21/06/2023 23:30

Once when I found a guy who'd been attacked in the street although my main reason for calling was for the ambulance tbh

Walkingtheplank · 21/06/2023 23:32

Twice when I was burgled - could not have been less interested.

Once when my next door neighbourc was being beaten up by her partner. I was told it was just a domestic.

Bouledeneige · 21/06/2023 23:33

Oh I thought if another time when I saw a man threatening a bunch of 10yr old boys in a park with a big stick. So that's 4.

heartofglass23 · 21/06/2023 23:34

3 that I can remember off the top of my head.

They were worse than useless.

I don't think I'd ever call them again.

SkaneTos · 21/06/2023 23:34

Zero times.

TheCatterall · 21/06/2023 23:36

Last week 999 4 times in one day. 101 several times in one day. 7 calls in total from me. That was after my son absconded from an acute mental health ward he’s sectioned on.

He goes missing approx 2-3 times a year so it’s similar number each time.

Occasional calls because I’ve witnessed ASB, or I worry someone is a danger to themselves or others b

I’m also a chair of a large local charity (community centre, library etc) so ring 101 and local officers about various matters.

gogomoto · 21/06/2023 23:37

Loads of times from work, personally, maybe 8-10

bawchops · 21/06/2023 23:37

Never called- sorry!
