How to get through this seminar/lecture

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 21/06/2023 07:55

Only posting for banter but I have a compulsory seminar I have been signed up for today at work. A full day. My worst nightmare. I lose focus very easily and I am currently going under review for ADHD. My mind wonders, I get fidgety and I find it draining trying to look interested.

Any tips? Match sticks to keep eyes open? Glasses with open eyes printed on?

Please tell me I'm not the only person who struggles with meetings, lectures etc...

Note book and pens

I really struggle too. Doodling helps me.

What an excellent opportunity for some maladaptive daydreaming.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 21/06/2023 09:16

Bring some quiet fidget toys?

Try and find interesting things that are said, and write them down.

You could say to the facilitator that you struggle to focus and ask for more frequent breaks

Malarandras · 21/06/2023 09:17

Doodling is your friend. That and a big bottle of water. Take regular drinks and a trip to the toilet will soon be in order!

Buzzword bingo, plot a bestselling thriller, makeover your dream home. All things I’ve done during tedious meetings, but gosh a whole day is going to be tough. Good luck!

A packet of sweets. A sugar surge helps imv - though obviously not that useful all day.

Dinobooklover · 21/06/2023 10:17

Hi OP I have adhd and find meetings and trainings difficult for the same reason. Even 2hr meetings are hard for me.

Doodling or quiet fidget toys will be your friend. People with adhd brains actually process information much better if they're also doing something else. Also if you're doodling, you'll look like you're taking loads of notes!

Dinobooklover · 21/06/2023 10:18

Also if you can get outside during your breaks, that will help.

AlisonDonut · 21/06/2023 10:22

It is up to the trainer to keep you interested, if your mind is wandering then it isn't your fault it is the trainer's.

Alot of trainers are shite at this. So I used to take a diary or notebook and basically do loads of forward planning and to do lists, it makes it look like you are taking notes, which of course you can also do on the side of the page just in case a question comes your way.

It's been ok. Mind has been on over kill but just having lunch. Luckily the trainer said we are allowed to check emails etc. God send.

Exactly. I enjoy them for this very reason.

Diddykong · 21/06/2023 12:50

A good facilitator won't talk for more than 20 mins before sending you off to discuss or work on something.

But otherwise sugar caffeine

I find squishing Blutak very distracting and therapeutic on these situations. I kept a lump in my pencil case and on my laptop stand for these purposes!
