Do people use beach tents in Spain?

we’re looking at booking an abroad holiday. My husband isn’t a big fan of the sun and I think he would be much ore likely to join us at the beach if we had a decent beach tent that would offer some shade and protection.
But I’m not sure if they are ‘a thing’ in Spanish beach resorts? From what I remember people either lie in the sun or hire the sun beds with parasols. Would they be pissed off at us turning up with a tent?

They will just look at you think “ingles” and not give it any more thought.
Dont worry about it

Are tents not better for wind/babies? You might be better with a brolly.

yes, they do.
They take chairs, tables, windbreaker things, tents... the kitchen sink. All wheeled on a trolley. They trndle passed my flat every day.
Enjoy!

*trundle past

Vitaminbees · 19/06/2023 19:15

Excellent! Not sure how much of that will fit in a suitcase but I’m up for kitchen sink beach days!

Whenever I’ve been to Spain there are plenty of tents, parasols and all sorts set up by different nationalities. It gets incredibly hot and there’s usually limited shade, so nobody will be judging you.

When DC were small we’d take a pop up tent, but that might be a bit small for an adult. Last time we bought a big parasol in a beach shop for about 15 Euros and gave it to a family in the next apartment when we left.

The sport brella above is what we have for English beach holidays for DH who can't go in the sun. He angles it so he is in the shade all day.

It's brilliant. Fits two large camping chairs either side of the pole and the cool box in the middle, plus you can hang stuff from the outside.

I'd take it to Spain if I was driving over.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 19/06/2023 19:35

Ps. It's much much better than a pop up tent. More ventilation and like I said you can sit properly u der it.

If you want to extend the shade cast by a normal umbrella, take clothes pegs and peg a sarong to the rim; keeps the sun from getting underneath. You can also dry your cossies / towels

FeedMeTiramisu · 19/06/2023 19:51

Spanish here with most of my family back in Spain so travel back often.
I have family members that use something like the umbrella thing. Admittedly, they were mainly used for the kids but the adults ended up using it just as much as the kids did.

You would have to get a UV one. I've stayed in a tent at a campsite in Spain that had no shade at all. We had stayed at campsites in Europe before. But the tents were surrounded the trees for shade. This camp site the tents were bright green. There was one palm tree between each tent offering no shade at all. It was like an oven and we couldn't really be in it during the day. We would literally sleep in there and just eat bread salad cold meats and fruit. Anything we didn't have to cook. We just hire the sun loungers with the parasol. But mainly to sit on than sunbathe. You usually get good shade with the parasols. You would also have to pack it and bring it back. Which will use some of your baggage allowance.

Strawberrydelight78 · 19/06/2023 20:22

This looks good I was looking at tent on Amazon. One of reviews said there's only a vid to put it up not pack away. Which is much harder said they nearly had a mental breakdown putting it away. This looks much easier if you have infants/toddlers.

Spanish myself. Depends on the beach they may look odd at you but not because of the tent because of the space you are taking. In some places people wake up at 6-7 to put the towel, parasol and other stuff early in the morning. Some beaches in Spain in summer has more people per square meter than the tube in London in peak hour. 😀

Lacucuracha · 19/06/2023 20:46

Beach tents are £9 in Tesco at the moment.

wagnbobble · 19/06/2023 20:47

Have seen lots in Majorca used by adults and children over the years

Vitaminbees · 19/06/2023 20:51

Brolly one is too big for suitcase. I guess we could check it as hold luggage!
or just go with the pegging sarong option!

Tesco one is very portable, about 60cm, in its own bag.

planthelpadvice · 19/06/2023 22:17

Just get the beach tent - who cares if it's not what the locals do - I can't imagine they will be bothered in the slightest 🙂

Vitaminbees · 19/06/2023 22:31

I think the Tesco one will be too small and a bit hot. Dh isn’t the smallest! Looks a great deal for little ones in this country though

We took a beach tent and would set it up under a hired parasol/shade sail as a place to nap and change in privacy.

Spain is alot hotter than here and the way the beaches face, a tent is going to be hot as an oven and not generate much shade. You will need to hire some shade once there. Don’t try and take a parasol with you on the plane.
