To be so surprised at what people throw away

My dh works at the local tip. Actually he commutes between two local ones on days he’s needed.

They are allowed to help themselves to stuff to bring home. He has come home with some amazing things. Dvds still sealed. Teddies with tags. Furniture in excellent condition. He’s even bought home ornaments that are in pristine condition.

Some of it is valuable. Some not so much.

We have a local Facebook group for giving away things. I’ve given Loads away like potties, unused nappies, kids bike, kitchen cupboards. I nearly got myself a pair of roller skates the other day, but we’re too small when I tried them on.
saves me a trip to the top and I like that fact that they are useful to someone else.

I think the problem is with the buying in the first place. As a society we produce and buy too much and then when it’s no longer useful to us it’s a pain to get rid of. Like others I can’t be dealing with the hassle of selling stuff for a couple of quid and most things like that ornament you showed or DVDs have little to no value second hand. Even Freecycle is 99% tat. Our charity shops are in the pedestrianised shopping centre so I can’t drive to them to take stuff and even then they often say no donations we are full. Luckily our dump has a too good to go section which we use.

I don’t see the point in accumulating things in my house rather than the landfill.

MagicBullet · 10/07/2023 21:37

Yep I agree the issue is that we are buying too much in the first place.
But I’m go g to say it also includes keeping ‘second hand’ stuff like the OP has just because they are free and new or nearly new.
If you don’t need it, you don’t. That should be the end of that.

I dont know what that is. If its something online where my details would be given out I wouldnt be interested.

I’ve given kids away to Freecycle. You just register and it’s free to use. People don’t know your name or phone number unless you give it. They just come and take your unwanted stuff . It’s so easy. I have also got some stuff from there. I got a Nespresso machine and milk frother which works perfectly.

Kingsparkle · 10/07/2023 21:45

@MagicBullet - I agree, it’s just prolonging the inevitable.

This is one of my favourite things he’s bought home. No damages to it at all

Omg OP.
I collected these. I had the whole collection. Iirc they are 18ct gold bits. They were from brookes and Bentley. About £50 each back 25 years..

They were in my display unit and a workman knocked into it and the lot collapsed. Everything was smashed!
Has brought back a lovely memory
