Places to live in the UK that’s not too hot in the summer

Hi, as per my username I suppose (NC) I really can’t stand the heat and muggy weather, it seems to get worse every year, neither can my husband or DS can either and ive finally considered moving elsewhere in the U.K., somewhere where it never goes over 30 degrees!!!! Very limited friends and family this way so hardly any ties but would both still need to work (finance)

We currently live in the south east , does anyone have any recommendations for nice areas to live, that’s not too hot in the summer and the people are friendly?

I don't blame you for your way of thinking OP but atm hot weather is still a relatively small amount of the whole year. What about the rest of the year? Would you also be okay with endless grey /cold / wet and most of all, windy days?

I've considered this myself except we have strong ties here plus my DH would never move! But I can still fantasise. However, I was in Scotland last summer and the wind was something else, in fact there's warnings about climate change damage on various buildings eg Edinburgh castle. I don't live in Scotland though and it's a huge area so it probably depends on where you move to

I'm from a NW Scotland coastal area and it's been disgustingly hot the last couple of weeks. 30 or so, and often no wind to alleviate it. Hideous. I don't think anywhere will be totally exempt going forward. Obviously the further north you go the fewer days like that there'll be though.

But the heat is only one factor you'd need to consider obviously. Are you okay with midges? If not, you really need to be east of Inverness. Long dark winters? If not, you need to be further south. Cold weather? Though it CAN get hot here, mostly it isn't. Much of the mid summer is 12-14 degrees or so, often with a cooling wind.

Wherever you decide, I suggest you spend a couple of weeks there in midsummer and midwinter before committing ☺️

North east Scotland. Dry, sunny, green, beautiful, uncrowded.

@Gingerwright wow really?! I don't think we've even hit 30 yet in my part of middle England!

Nowhere is too hot in the British summer

There seem to be a significant number of mumsnetters who panic as soon as the thermometer hits a warm and pleasant 20 degrees.

I'm on the edge of the Pennines in South Yorkshire and we rarely get above 30 degrees but we did last summer.

I also think it depends on your housing and lifestyle.

We live in a house with outside space, drive cars with aircon, and my office has aircon. You simply can't compare this to a stuffy London commute and offices in old buildings with no aircon.

@yut yes 😬 outside thermometer (in the shade) showed 29/30 on a couple of occasions recently. It's not a superbly impressive thermometer right enough!

It reached 30 degrees last week in Dumfries in Scotland last week it was in the news. It's very uncommon though to get those high temperatures. This month has been far hotter than we are used to in Scotland.

WhyPie · 19/06/2023 14:26

I'm in Scotland and the summer is lovely but the winters are awful and spring is freezing too so you'd have to factor the other months of the year in!

Dinoboymama · 19/06/2023 14:29

We live in the West central area of Scotland we don't get freezing winters like the north do but not the heat like England do in summer. It feels like just the right spot.

I saw a comment about midges we don't get them a lot around us it's further north on the west side they appear.

Crikey a bit drastic for the sake of 2 weeks in the year, wouldn't it be cheaper to pay for air conditioning?! (Although maybe not if moving from the SE to north Scotland!)

This! It's not like it's all summer.
Get air con
