Dating a doctor

If you started dating an NHS doctor (not as a patient of theirs), do you think they might check your medical records? I know there are rules on this, but are there ways around it?

If they did somehow do this, it’d leave a record on the system. They would get into very serious trouble.

ghlily · 18/06/2023 18:35

… and apart from getting into trouble it would be a massive invasion of privacy. Not sure I would continue dating someone if I found out that they had done this to me.

Fudgewomble · 18/06/2023 18:36

If they did and were found out they would lose their job and possibly be struck off and lose their right to practise as a dr. Most trusts have incredibly rigorous checks and balances to see who has seen what medical records and why. There are random audits and routine checks. There’s no way of checking without leaving a digital footprint. It does happen though (as in people access medical records without a direct patient relationship) - as there are a handful of cases in the news.

Why are you dating them - or anyone - if you think they are dishonest?

Also random doctors and nurses, unfortunately for them, get told far to much about people's random aliments. Some of my relations and friends have had to hide from neighbours which is probably why they have moved house so frequently.

WonderfulUsername · 18/06/2023 18:38

Why on earth do you think they might want to check them?

TheSnowyOwl · 18/06/2023 18:38

If you are concerned you should be able to specially request that your records are made sensitive to him/her searching for them which means it will immediately flag up and be audited.

Some people are extremes nosey

*extremely

A doctor would know the rules so why would they risk their career by looking at records without a legitimate reason?

Firstnamesurname31 · 18/06/2023 18:40

Unless it’s your personal doctor or one who works at a hospital you’ve been under is very unlikely that they even could. NHS records aren’t joined up or shared between GP surgeries or trusts.
Even if they were your doctor there are pretty strong rules against relationships with their patients…

Kusamayayoi · 18/06/2023 18:42

@Firstnamesurname31 Thank you, that's what I wanted it know.

Well yes, but I wanted to know why the OP thinks the person might look.

Shopper727 · 18/06/2023 18:46

I don’t think they’d be that interested. I can look up medical records but there is no one I know or am related to that I would look up even if I could. We have fair warning and if we look up someone who we aren’t directly caring for it flags up. I know for one I am not risking my registration and job checking if mrs Pringle down the road has been treated for an std and I doubt a dr with years of med school and training would either.

i know some have and it makes you wonder why on earth they would but i would hope it’s not common with all the safeguards in place now.

Cardifflost · 18/06/2023 19:22

Clearly this does happen its just been all over the news and the doctor didn't lose their jobs. The way they got access was quite sneaky to a particular record system. However it did come up on audit so there are systems in place.
