They seem to have different names !

Dreading it getting even hotter .

Would love air con but it’s expensive and needs ducting ?

Fans are ok, but are air coolers better ?

They are fine if the air is already cool. If the air is warm and humid then no they just add to the humidity. I tried all sorts including these to sleep better. Finally this year we saved and bought a meaco portable air conditioner. Yes it needs to vent out a window but it really does cool the room down.

I’d love an air conditioner but are windows aren’t really suitable to vent, we have looked into it .

I hoped this option would be better than a fan .

Yes I have recently bought a small air cooler for DS's bedroom as it is the warmest room in the house. It would be difficult to use an air conditioner as the window only opens a small amount (direct drop from first floor onto concrete).

There are 3 water containers that you can fill with cold water or freeze like ice packs. They sit in front of the fan part so that the air is cooled. You do have to be right by it to feel the benefit but it is helpful to have it on his bedside table so it is cooling his head down.

Ah is this a small one of it goes on a table ? Quite like the idea of that .

I live in an extremely hot flat. I considered buying one but decided not to. I was concerned that they would increase humidity and make things more uncomfortable. I was also worried it might lead to condensation and damp....although I'm not sure that is a realistic concern.

I bought a Meaco portable air conditioner which vents out of the window. It's okay. I use it to cool my bedroom before I go to bed. I couldn't use it while sleeping though, because it's too noisy. And once it's switched off the room heats up again pretty quickly.

I have this one. It has fairly bad reviews as it doesn't really cool a whole room but if you just want it on your bedside table or desk it definitely feels cooler than a normal fan that just distributes the warm air around.

We had one given to us and returned it with a thanks but no thanks after trying it out in the heatwave for one night last year. Yes it cools the room, but everything felt damp and there was an odd smell as well (probably musty damp!)

Nannyfannybanny · 18/06/2023 21:13

We have a beldray cool/,ionizer cooler, you can use dry or with water/freezer blocks, and a proper pifco air conditioning unit, all singing and dancing. It didn't "fit" our bedroom window either,so DH made a wooden frame for the hosing. In the kitchen or conservatory,it pokes out the dog flap. You can use it just as a coolant, without drawing the warm air out of the room.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/06/2023 21:15

Never had any damp issues or funny smells. The air conditioning unit removes warm air.

I’d be concerned about the humidity as well as my flat gets damp easily .

What make is that ? It’s desk top ?

So would an expensive fan be better ?

I’ve seen that one has good reviews. There is also a pedestal version, but costs more.

is it worth the money ? It’s a lot more than I’ve paid for fans before.

I have a portable aircon. It’s a life saver. Venting has always been a pain since you really need to drill a big hole for effective seal. But last year I looked for a solution on Amazon then hit on my own solution.
We had some leftover sticky carpet protector , used when decorating. It’s a bit like sticky back plastic. I stick it over the window then cut an opening for the vent. The aircon we bought has a solid plastic plate than I secured under the plastic.
It lasted all summer last year so I used it again this year.
Our old aircon unit is now in DS’s room it’s probably 20 yrs old but still works fine. He finds it too noisy on cooling setting but uses the fan setting at night as it is just the right height for his bed. It’s much quieter than a normal fan.
I think if we continue to have warm summers I may have proper units fitted.
The portable ones are far more economic than they used to be. As long as you keep the doors and windows closed they cool down the room rapidly.

We have thick solid walls and can’t drill into them . Our windows are small but open awkwardly so not sure how we would vent. Very annoying as I’d like to go for this . Also no outside doors as upstairs flat, so can’t use cat flap type options .

like you though I am thinking proper air con, but not sure as doesn’t it need an outside box vent ? We aren’t allowed to add things into the outside of our block .

am tempted between this and the pedestal version .

@goshitsturnedwarm imho it is definitely worth the money. As it's a fan, it doesn't really drop the temperature, but the breeze from it is lovely and is enough to keep me cool. On the lowest settings it's really quiet, but I can sleep even on the higher settings as it's a soothing white noise sound.

If you look on the Meaco website they sometimes have refurbished or returned ones at a discount...that's what I bought. It works out cheaper in the long run than all of the useless cheaper fans I've bought over the years!
