Hand and fingers all weird looking after broken wrist

My son broke his wrist over the Easter holidays. He has to have it manipulated… without surgery but under general.

He had it in a long cast for about 6 weeks. He’s had it off now for about 3 weeks and physio is going well, although the wrist is still stiff and bulging, but not swollen.

But I cut his finger nails today and I’ve noticed that the cuticle area on his fingers are really swollen, the end of the nail bed is also white, like it’s pressed against the skin too hard and his has completely changed shape and size compared to his other one!

Has anyone experienced anything like this with a break?

I’ve attached pics

My fingersnails on one hand are bigger than the other hand

I’m pretty sure his were even. But it’s not something I’ve paid full attention to. And he’s useless at telling me 🤣

I’ll contact gp in the morning just in case. Thanks

Yes, it made me think of digital clubbing as well. I think it can be caused by different things, and I'm not sure about the complicating factor of the break and surgery etc.

I’ve had a bit of a read and it says lack of oxygen, so I’ll chat to gp about it tomorrow. Thanks

This is the bit I read, that talks about the early stages. I wondered if the lumps are 'floating nail bed'? And at least one of them does look quite flat I think?

It's from https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/symptoms/24474-nail-clubbing

What are the early stages of nail clubbing?
Nail clubbing often occurs gradually and may be hard to spot at first. In the early stages, you may notice any of the following:

  • Floating nail: The root of your nail becomes separated from the bone. When you press on the nail plate, it moves slightly. The base of your nail may feel springy or like it’s floating on a soft cushion.
  • Lovibond angle sign: When you view your fingernail from the side, it should have a slight dent at the base. This dent, known as the Lovibond angle, makes a slight upward curve as your nail grows toward your fingertip. In the early stages of nail clubbing, your nail and nail bed look flat from the side.

Nail Clubbing: What It Looks Like, Causes & Treatment

Nail clubbing is when your nails appear wider, spongelike or swollen like an upside-down spoon.

Definitely not normal, but what the cause and best solution is I don't know, so that's not very helpful.
Wanted to add my 'you're not wrong to be concerned' though. đź‘€

I feel the same!

Is the broken hand the same temperature as his good hand
It's normal for wrist to be stiff after a cast but no idea what the problem is
I hope the GP has the answers

Now that's a pertinent article!

HarveyDanger · 21/06/2023 21:25

Thank you for that article! That’s exactly what it is and a really interesting read!

GP has sent a referral for him, but I’m also trying to contact orthopaedic dept to see if we can get in sooner as he was only recently discharged
