I tend to just replace mine every few months ..

You cannot be for real?!

WonderfulUsername · 18/06/2023 16:33

It depends on what they're filled with.

Hollow fiber tends to go horribly lumpy after a wash so I normally end up replacing.

Eh?

Op, you absolutely can wash pillows, even down ones. However, drying them in a dryer is recommended as it fluffs them and gets the fully dry.

mumyes · 18/06/2023 16:35

No, I meant the OP can't be for real buying new pillows every few months. I've had our pillows for 15+ years! Never washed! 😳

cantcopenow · 18/06/2023 16:37

I wash them every now and then, and tumble dry them. We have feather pillows.

I just googled how to stop pillows going flat and it was talking about washing them.

I’ve never done this! I always put two covers on either side but … yeah. I just replace as they always go so flat.

If you have particular issues could you use an extra pillow case or you could get protectors which you can wash? Bit more environmentally friendly.

Oh I see. In which case, we bought Premier inn pillows which have kept their shape well.

Topseyt123 · 18/06/2023 16:39

Yes. I rarely buy new pillows and when I do have to I make sure to buy machine washable ones. I do them about every six months, or no more than twelve months anyway.

I washed mine yesterday.

I think just throwing them away is dreadful for the environment.

But surely that's the other extreme?

YappyCamper · 18/06/2023 16:52

I try washing them but it usually just makes them lumpy and horrible

Topseyt123 · 18/06/2023 17:01

Pillows should get the odd wash and be changed over every now and then. You sweat a lot through your hair and around the back of your neck and it does gradually become absorbed by the pillow.

Obviously if you have duck down or feather ones then you can't machine wash them, but most polyester or hollow fibre ones you can. I love them after they have been washed.

You absolutely can wash down and feather pillows. I have many, many times and they come out beautifully if done properly. It's very easy.

woodhill · 18/06/2023 17:15

I wash the feather ones. They are old. About once a year and use protectors

In fact they wash better than synthetic ones which go Oompa Loompa

Whataretalkingabout · 18/06/2023 17:16

Of course you can machine wash duck down or feather pillows! Once a year and machine dry, 30 Celsius and on gentle cycle.
Don't you know that ducks absolutely love being wet?? ;)

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 18/06/2023 17:17

Hollowfibre ones go shit when washed so when I had those years ago I used to replace every 6-9 months. Now I have down pillows and wash them every 6 months and dry them in the dryer and they come out like brand new. I do have 2 pillow protectors on them as well. One with a zip and then a padded protector for comfort.

Sorry but that is grim. The amount of sweat, dust, dust mites that must be in them is 🤮🤮

I would say they are due a wash or treat yourself to some new ones.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 18/06/2023 17:19

My pillows are washed and tumble dried weekly with my sheets and duvet covers. We use hair products, we sleep with wet hair, they need washing. When they go lumpy then I replace them.

TerfIngOnTheBeach · 18/06/2023 17:20

I’ve never successfully washed a pillow without it going lumpy whatever the filling.

these days I only use feather and have good quality thick quilted pillow protectors in which you absolutely can wash to no Ill effect.

Yes, I do. Down and hollow fibre are fine to machine wash.

BUT
I had a nice squishy foamy one that said "do not machine wash". I did and it broke the drum. So don't wash those!

MeinKraft · 18/06/2023 17:27

I wash the standard average pillow but I have two big hotel style pillows that would break my washing machine they're so heavy. Although it's just occurred to me I could take them to one of those outdoor laundrettes couldn't I!

Doggymummar · 18/06/2023 17:30

All mine go in the wash we have two feather ones each and hollow fibre ones with speakers in. They all wash and dry fine.

I sometimes take my pillows to the launderette if I am doing my duvet at the same time. I quite like sitting and reading a book waiting for it.
