Please help me leave the NHS. Own business?

Midwife here. I am/was passionate so happy to accept the shit pay, but I genuinely cannot work within the NHS anymore.

I'd like to be able to earn significantly more than I do now. Perhaps set up my own business. I was thinking aesthetics but I'm aware it's very saturated now?

Please give me any ideas you have on what I could do next - I'm honestly desperate!

I'd be happy to invest some money into ideally starting my own business, but would also retrain or join an entirely different industry.

Would you do private midwifery and birth classes etc. I went to a prenatal yoga run by an ex midwife and active birthing classes etc

Do you want to stay within healthcare? Do you have a passion for anything in particular? Working with children? Adults? Animals?

  • Osteopath? I used to go to an osteopathy school which had a clinic and the vast majority of the students were mature age, having already had careers in other things. Some health related, but 1 was an ex-police officer and another used to be a chef. Once qualified, you can hire a room to use (or run your own business') and choose your hours. I also went to a qualified lady, who did an additional module and could also treat animals. She spent 1 day a week at stables, and would do horse and rider sessions! I find them far more holistic than chiropractors. You could find you are in demand for pregnancy/baby/child osteopathy in particular.
  • Mothers help/monthly nurse. Its called that in Mrs Beetons book, but I'm not sure what the modern term is? Someone that helps at home in the first month or so after birth. Helping with BF advice etc.
  • Baby/child CPR/choking classes for new parents/grandparents etc
  • Podiatrist? I always see adverts for foot care courses. Clearly not for everyone though 😬Many people are looking for food care in their homes though- esp with the cutbacks from NHS podiatry services
  • Ear care and syringing/suctioning. I know GP's often don't do this now, but I'm unsure if there is a medical reason not to? Locally I've often seen adverts for nurses providing this in peoples homes

Thank you.

I would stay in healthcare I suppose. My only passion is midwifery, so if I'm doing something other than that then I'd want a much higher earning potential.

Thank you for some great ideas!

What are you currently earning and why do you want to leave? There is such a need for midwives - can you not move trusts or try the community? Bear in mind as well that the nhs pension is effectively 40% of your salary on top of whatever you are earning. It’s hard to improve on.

Doula?

Although I guess it would blur the lines a bit.
Doulas make a mint in SW London though.

Private sector as a midwife?

LegendsBeyond · 18/06/2023 13:07

It’s hard to beat an NHS pension, so bare that in mind. Have you accumulated a good pension amount already? Could you move into lecturing on midwifery courses?

I really have fallen out of love with midwifery.

As a podiatrist if you do a foot health practitioners course you can't call yourself a podiatrist or a chiropodist. (But you can call yourself a foot health practitioner) the earning potential probably the same though.

**apologies don't want to derail your thread.

On the other hand I really love my work. 😁

quiteathome · 18/06/2023 16:17

You could also train in massage and that side of things.

Overthebow · 18/06/2023 16:20

What do you earn now, taking into account the pension value? Would you be willing to do something on a lower salary whilst you build up some years of experience?

MariaVT65 · 18/06/2023 16:22

Yes i’ve also heard the NHS pension is significantly better compared to other jobs. My NHS also get quite a bit more annual leave than I do as well, and better sick pay policies etc.

Is there a different area of midwifery you could go into? Such as infant feeding? Community? Mental health?
