A carpenter? Maybe depends on context

Ha, that was my thought. My dad ran a building firm. If he needed a chippy, he needed a carpenter or joiner.

(A) Chippy here would be a carpenter.
Chipper means in a good mood.

Never heard 'they're chippy'. NW if that's helps.

I'm NW and definitely know chippy as touchy and defensive.

They have lots of ‘chips on their shoulder’ and easily get upset or defensive about a number of topics.

Chippy means feeling hard done by in life or in some specific area and letting people know in a slightly aggressive way . It's an insult.

No. That's A chippy. Chippy as a noun.

OP has asked for the definition of chippy as a pronoun.

It's an adjective in this context, surely?

Agree with 'prickly; easily offended' as the definition.

FFS. I'm barely awake, but it's still not excusable. Adjective, not pronoun

Mamaneedsadrink · 18/06/2023 07:50

A carpenter. A sparky is an electrician. I think chipper is happy. Maybe chippy is someone who makes fish and chips! 😀

saraclara · 18/06/2023 07:50

We posted at the same time @LaPerduta ! And yep, I'm losing it Blush

lljkk · 18/06/2023 07:50

resentful, irritable, complaining, in a quick comment each time but recurring persistent way. Not a lot of fun in those moments, tiresome.

Argumentative. Abrasive. Keen to pick a fight.

MyDogStoodOnABee · 18/06/2023 07:59

Chippy = carpenter
Chipper = happy, carefree

110APiccadilly · 18/06/2023 08:01

Easily offended.

VisionsOfSplendour · 18/06/2023 08:01

Definitely means easily offended and takes everything as a personal sleight

I always smile when people say where they are from in this context like they've never been exspoed to words from outside their region, don't read or watch TV or speak to anyone 😀

coradelia · 18/06/2023 08:02

Chip on their shoulder. Inferiority complex most likely.

coradelia · 18/06/2023 08:04

You often see it applied to working class people in C20 period dramas. Room at the Top offhand example.

SquashPenguin · 18/06/2023 08:05

A chippy is a carpenter. Never heard it used in another context.

FavouriteDogMug · 18/06/2023 08:08

😆at chippy as a pronoun. To be honest I do know a few people who seem like they might identify this way.

YukoandHiro · 18/06/2023 08:09

Chippy means quick to anger or gets offended or pissed off by any minor infraction.

Chipper is happy and sunny
