Is it dangerous to stand near windows in a thunderstorm

I was always told when I was small to stay away from Windows when there was thunder and lightening. Also to unplug devices.

Currently going through a thunder storm. I am at home with my mother. She usually gets a fright and starts shaking a bottle of holy water around the home and blessing the home with it.

The thunder storm was well and truly underway and I was wondering where she was and she was in the sitting room spraying the windows with windowlean and wiping them down and I asked her what she was doing and she was saying she was bored and she has to be doing something.

I think she might have the onset of dementia but it's behavioural issues and this could be another one.

Is it dangerous to stand near windows and should I catch this on camera and document it to show a doctor in the hope it helps me with a diagnosis. If not now but later on down the line. There's stuff that's happening that's now quite right.

No need to move from the window or the holy water. The only danger is being under a tree.

Enjoy the storm Flowers

Yes to catching it on camera, definitely

I meant catching my mother's behaviours on camera. Not the storm.

Catch her on camera cleaning the windows?
Your doctor might thing there is something wrong with you.

It’s more unusual to spray holy water around during a storm.

I was always told to stay away from Windows when there was thunder and lightening and then today I found my mother spraying cleaning the windows douring the thunder storm.

I came here to request for information about thunderstorms and lightening and standing near windows if it's dangerous and if so should I document my mother doing that.

Now I read that it's not dangerous to be near windows so, so be it.

This recent thundery weather has brought out a rash of people writing 'lightening' when they mean 'lightning'. Just waiting for someone to come up with 'it was thundering and lightening' as I heard someone say on a bus the other day.

JulieHoney · 17/06/2023 16:29

You and your mum have some unusual beliefs. No, you don't have to avoid windows in a thunderstorm . What do you think would happen? And no, you can't make things safe by spraying holy water.

also -
Lightening - becoming lighter eg "lightening the load"
Lightning - bolt of electricity from the sky.

QuintanaRoo · 17/06/2023 16:32

Decades ago my grandmothers tv was blown up by a bolt of lightning. I suspect that was more likely when people had aerials on their roof. I still watch tv during a storm, and stand by windows if I feel the need.

cuckyplunt · 17/06/2023 16:34

Well a storm is literally an act of God, so shouldn’t one assume that he knows what he is doing?

whatabeautifulwedding · 17/06/2023 16:36

Never heard this but the capital letter in Windows made me envisage people staying away from their computers

legalseagull · 17/06/2023 16:43

Are you joking that she usually shakes holy water during a storm???

If so, surely you find that stranger than the completely normal act of cleaning your windows?

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2023 16:49

We had a thunderstorm while I was at work last week. My colleague went round closing all the curtains. And would have hidden under the nurses station if she could have. Apparently that's what you do during a storm. Hmm

tackling · 17/06/2023 16:50

My guess is you're more worried about the change in behaviour OP?

I don't think filming that would prove anything though.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2023 16:51

And she wanted to unplug everything. Since most of it was medical equipment. That wasn't happening either. Bless her.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 17/06/2023 16:57

DS said did your old house/ old windows have metal frames and now they don't? You wouldn't want to touch metal in a thunder storm.

arcticmnkey · 17/06/2023 16:57

I'm guessing it's the change in behaviour, how you were always told not to stand by the windows during a storm but now she is, I can understand that.
What else has been happening that makes you think of dementia ?

Theblacksheepandme · 17/06/2023 17:02

Are you Irish OP?

LaBefana · 17/06/2023 17:04

@QuintanaRoo

I suspect that was more likely when people had aerials on their roof.

We've still got one and it's in use daily.

Well in case of a thunder storm you should probably do what my dad always said to do after what happened to my Gran and unplug the tv and aerial lead. 😀

QuintanaRoo · 17/06/2023 17:11

My gran also used to put the knives away in a drawer in a storm….don’t think she was as bothered about the forks but definitely the knives! 🤷‍♀️

cafecreme · 17/06/2023 17:14

I was planning to stock up on holy water this morning but when I walked past the church it was rammed with a Holy Communion service 🤷‍♀️

I guess so. It's been up for 30 years and we've never had any trouble yet.

MyGrandmaLizzie · 17/06/2023 17:28

My needlework teacher (in the mid 70s) used to make us put down all the pins, needles and scissors if there was a thunderstorm during our lessons.

chipshopElvis · 17/06/2023 17:29

My mother used to tell us to stay away from windows too OP, she would shut the curtains, we weren't allowed to run water or use electrical devices either abd definitelynot the phone. Also from an Irish Catholic family. I don't pay any of it any heed now but I do wonder if there are reasons, she was very adamant.

You definitely should as this form of simultaneous familial mental disturbance is highly infectious and you may have to be quarantined .
