What did you discover about your house after moving in?

I recently moved into a new house and as it was still the height of the market, there wasn’t much time to decide and investigate. What crazy things have you discovered in your house after buying it that wasn’t obvious when you first viewed it?

The electrics were fucked... ( no idea how not picked up on surveys etc!)... rising damp despite damp course certificate...

Because a surveyor doesn’t check your electrics and they would have recommended you had and electrician to do that.

That although the stone flooring and tiling in the bathroom and the stone flooring and countertops in the kitchen look lovely, they mean the two north-west facing rooms are absolutely FREEZING for six months of the year.

That when we said that yes, we would like them to finish off the plastering and painting in the utility before we purchased the property, that we should have specified that this also meant the downstairs WC that was off the utility and also needed doing. And that half the electrics in the WC were bodged. And the toilet needed replacing. And the plumbing for the sink didn’t actually have an outlet. And the door you helpfully left behind to go between the utility and WC didn’t fit. And the gap for the door was a non standard size so we couldn’t get a basic one from the DIY store.

That the plaster in half the rooms had popped but they’d done a quick cover up with fresh paint so it wasn’t obvious.

That there is a leak in the flat roof above the garage and in the bay window.

Ha, you all need my H round when you view- even in rented houses he runs shower, turns taps on, flushed loos, opens windows, checks out power points etc!! I often feel a bit embarrassed but it has saved us from a few houses that were all fur coat and no knickers.

That it has views of the most gorgeous sunsets during the winter months.

I hadn't noticed but there is a butlers sink outside in the corner of the back garden with hot and cold running water, perfect for bathing a Jack Russell or cleaning roasting pans.

That the bathroom had been given a pre-selling make-over and was actually falling to bits.

That it is impossible to heat downstairs.

It's bloody cold most of the time, despite central heating. The only time it's vaguely warm is early summer evenings.

That the tenants next door liked to play electric amplified guitars late in the evening. All five of them.

Luckily their landlord sold the house not long after.
