Gift ideas for young GD having minor eye surgery

I'm a distance Grandma living quite a long way from our 5 year old granddaughter & she is due to have some corrective surgery on both of her eyes shortly. Not sure exactly what is involved but she is having problems at school with her vision & concentrating - & her Mum & both her big sisters wear glasses.

So I've been thinking of sending her a wee care parcel - & so far I've thought of putting in some sweets, a little folding card envelope with a trinket or a tiny surprise - but wonder if anyone has any other ideas.

I'm aware that some activities may be limited because she may not be able to focus that well & will need to rest her eyes so books or colouring in activities might not be very helpful. Thanks.

PS - my son & his partner are not together anymore but I have a good relationship with our GD Mum & her family so I feel blessed to hear updates & news from them even though we dont see each other very often.

Lovely idea. I would go with a cuddly toy too.

Ds had a big eye operation lately and audiobooks were very useful- played on an old cd player so he didn’t have to look at screens.

My daughter had an eye operation last week - sounds like it might be the same on as your granddaughter.

She has been uncomfortable and grumpy and has had to have a week off school so far so I’ve found lots of things we can spend a short amount of time on then put away when she has had enough has worked well - eg magic painting book, a Lego set, a chapter book I can read to her, a magazine, small easy craft sets, colouring book.

Please be careful with bubbles and bath fizzers suggested above -DD has had to be really careful about not getting things in her eyes, especially soap - she will have to be careful not to rub her eyes

good luck to your GD

Does she have a Tonie box? If so an extra Tonie figure for her to listen to.

If she doesn’t have one, would it be something you could all contribute towards

One of those popping things like plastic bubble wrap

Scratch and sniff scented stickers, so she can engage with her sense of smell regardless of how much she can see?

e.g.

Hope all goes well with her op. You sound like a lovely, caring Granny 🙂

My DD (similar age) would want a cuddly toy.

RaininSummer · 17/06/2023 07:41

Stickers and special little toys. My grandchildren love these washable animals you can colour in but maybe best for when her eyes settle.

eenymeenymineymo · 20/06/2023 07:09

Thanks so much for these ideas, I've ended up with getting her a couple of cards of stickers, a few lollipops (Vitamin C type for winter wellness), then I found a talking hamster on Temu - her Mum might hate it though 🤣🤣, & some lip balm stuff.

The hamster toy repeats everything it hears which sounds cute but I'm probably going one of "those" grannies haha, giving an annoying gift like this
