Can I have your views on hypnotherapy

For claustrophobia/ fear of flying please? I’ve tried nhs cbt (pointless), currently in talking therapy to address the deeper issues and also have a prescription for Propranolol.
I thought of trying out Hypnotherapy- the charge quoted is &590 for 3 sessions.

Has anyone tried this approach? Has it worked? Thank you!

Bump?

I had several sessions of (expensive!) hypnotherapy for anxiety. Nice and relaxing whilst it was going on and I was under, did nothing long term.

primoseyellow · 16/06/2023 18:03

A family member has had 3/4 sessions and swears by it, about £55.00 a session. They are also quite cynical about this kind of thing!

Thank you- this is extremely expensive and I’m a cynical person around these stuff too-

I think you could find another therapist who won’t charge as much. Hypnotherapy is brilliant but you need to find someone experienced and well trained.

Abhannmor · 16/06/2023 18:33

Two friends tried hypnotherapy for smoking. One is very skeptical and said as much to the therapist. But they never smoked again.

The second lasted 18 months. But says he went back to smoking ' in cold blood'. The price you were quoted seems a bit OTT though?

QueueEtwo · 16/06/2023 18:36

I had hypnotherapy for anxiety & panic attacks years ago worked brilliantly!

Hypnotherapy to stop smoking - useless I just cried a lot but it was different people!

MissChief001 · 16/06/2023 18:36

@Abhannmor yes the price seems so steep- the therapist seem to have qualifications etc however she also practices in Harley street, in addition to my hometown. This might explain the price…

@QueueEtwo thats helpful to know that it worked for panic attacks…

My grandmother used a hypnotherapist to stop smoking about 30 years ago. Maybe more. I'm in my mid 30s and was stunned when she told me as I'd never seen her smoke. She said that it was group sessions and on day 1 he told them that anyone who didn't really think it would work should leave. She was secretly skeptical but hasn't smoked since the first session. She just walked out and never smoked again.

Funkyslippers · 16/06/2023 19:34

My friend had hypnotherapy for this and now has no fear at all of flying

BMrs · 16/06/2023 19:34

We had someone try to break into our home and that left me with sever anxiety at night where I would wake for hours convinced I could hear someone in the garden/downstairs.

I had one session and never worried about it once since

Blingstar · 16/06/2023 19:39

I think hypnotherapy can work very well. I used it for weight loss. I was stunned by how influential it was. Prices seem to have increased considerably since covid though. I think I paid about 70 an hour.

The therapist I used has a package for anxiety priced at 575. It's for 4 sessions though. One of 90 mins and 3 for 60 mins, so cheaper than your quote.

Eyesopenwideawake · 16/06/2023 19:55

Disclaimer - I am a remedial hypnotist (similar to hypnotherapy except I don't put people into a trance).

I've worked with fear of flying with good results; "It was the most relaxed flight I had in decades!" It's a relatively easy phobia to deal with in 2 or 3 sessions. Prices do vary depending on location, overheads and profitability.

WhoWants2Know · 16/06/2023 19:56

I had hypnotherapy for anxiety around driving. It definitely helped.

saveforthat · 16/06/2023 19:58

I think you are either the sort of person who this works on.....or not. I'm not. Tried it for smoking years ago, I was desperate and willing but it had no affect whatsoever.

Hypnotherapistqualified · 16/06/2023 20:03

NC for this.
Im a qualified hypnotherapist though long retired. I think £50-90 per session these days would be reasonable. My record for stopping fear of flying and a happy, relaxed person getting on a plane is 45 minutes. Others took 3-6 sessions. Hypnotherapy works for many conditions, I hope it helps you and you find a good therapist.

MissChief001 · 16/06/2023 20:07

@Blingstar the £595 is for 3 sessions, 1st one 90 mins then the other two for 60 mins

Thank you for all your responses- although I’m cynical I don’t want to close this option totally as I’m desperate to beat this fear.

Blingstar · 16/06/2023 21:09

@MissChief001 I was trying to make the point you'd be getting 4 session for less. As the poster below says it could take 1 or up to 6 sessions.

I would shop around as many people will offer online consultations.

SirKurtBored · 16/06/2023 21:20

I had it for weight loss and found it very relaxing and effective

rosamoschata · 17/06/2023 01:02

Hypnotherapy totally helped me stop me smoking years ago. The effect was incredible - cigarettes and wanting to smoke them were just erased from my mind. It was incredible as I lived with a smoker and fags were always available.

A friend did it more recently for a shopping habit that she felt had got out of control. She told me her hypnotherapist said it works best when one part of your mind is arguing with another part. So the adult sensible part of your mind says "I mustn't buy anything today, I've already spent too much this month" but there is some old outdated coding in your brain in another place that says " oh go on! You know shopping makes you feel good and you deserve it after the day you've had ... go on..." My friend said the hypno said CBT didn't work for problems like hers as it just encourages the mind chatter and arguments, but hypnotherapy shuts down the old coding to somehow let the adult part of the mind take charge.

That would work with fear of flying wouldn't it?

I would say try it OP, but find somebody else. That price is too high and you aren't paying more for a better quality of service with a more reliable outcome, just the swanky address.

JaneJeffer · 17/06/2023 01:17

You could try this

I've used another of his videos and found it really helpful for my anxiety.

MissChief001 · 18/06/2023 14:20

@JaneJeffer thank you, will check this out

OP posts:
MissChief001 · 18/06/2023 14:22

@rosamoschata yes that would work for fear of flying as well. Agree the price is more upmarket and I would prefer to go to someone who is reasonably priced- the cynical me is struggling with what if doesn’t work and I’ve lost almost £600!!!
