Interrailing luggage

We're going interrailing this summer. 14 days with 5 traveling days. Belgium, Germany, Austria, France. Is a small wheelie suitcase or rucksack best?

Definitely a rucksack! It’s easier on the stairs/cobbles etc that you may encounter when off the train.

That sounds so fun. Can I ask, how much did it cost you for travel?

Absolutely, not a suitcase of any kind. Apart from having to drag it up and down multiple stairs and slopes etc many stations and other places which offered left luggage no longer seem to do so so you can't even offload it during the day if you need to. It's not great to have to haul a rucksack around on your back, but It's considerably easier than dragging the suitcase along.

I think it cost about £200 for the tickets, but now we're paying up for reservations... Going for the fancy high speed trains. Thanks for the advice. Will look for a sophisticated looking back pack (fancy trains)

If you can afford one they make backpacks where the front section unzips to be a day pack for when you are walking around a town and have 2 nights somewhere. Was really helpful

Rucksack all the way. I did 6 months round South America with a rucksack, it's way more practical and amazing what you can actually squeeze in there. If you're moving around a lot, a wheelie case will be a massive pain in the arse.

I did three weeks round Japan by train a few summers ago with a small (inflight size) wheeled suitcase. It was a slight problem on cobbled or uneven streets, but most of the time I was grateful not to have a huge bag strapped to my rather sweaty back. You might feel the same in a hot European summer. Have you looked into the kind of convertible backpack with wheels?

The main thing with that kind of holiday is to pack as light as possible, which involves cutting shoes and toiletries to a minimum, and researching where you can do laundry a couple of times during the trip. That way you can pick up your suitcase and carry it over short distances of rough terrain or up and down stairs without pulling a muscle.

Will be staying with friends in most places so laundry is possible. Am quite apprehensive about the heat. Carrying just one bag when travelling sounds good. We have some short connections
