I don't have any emotional attachment to any objects

Am I weird?

You often see reports that xyz is lost and help needed to find it because of the significant sentimental value.

I honestly can't think of anything I feel that attachment to. I lost the diamond out of my engagement ring. It was annoying because it cost money and I liked wearing the ring, but I didn't feel that I'd lost anything emotionally significant.

I don't have keepsakes of anything. Not tickets from our first date or baby's first shoes.

My mum wants me to go through some things she has from my GPs house and take what I want (they died more than 20 years ago). I honestly don't expect there to be anything that I want to have for the sake of having it. There might be something useful or maybe valuable that it would be a shame to throw away, but I can't think of anything I'd want to keep just to have. I wouldn't want her engagement ring, for example, it's just a thing I wouldn't use, but couldn't get rid of.

Does anyone else feel like that about "stuff".

Do you care about people or relationships or moral principles?

CatfoodOzymandias · 16/06/2023 17:31

I am the same as you. But that's because I have moved around a lot and did not have the luxury of getting attached. Had to empty houses too many times.

I think a lot of people are like that but its probably slightly more common to have a couple of sentimental items that remind you of a person you love/d.

I'm not sure I understand the link, but yes, I'd much rather spend money on seeing people than having stuff and I think I'm a good and reliable friend.

I don’t really get attached to ‘stuff’. Definitely not jewellery or baby clothes. I didn’t keep my kids first outfits or shoes, I have nothing from grandparents. I do like to have lots of photos and videos of family, friends and our pets but nothing else really.

Each to their own though.

Sounds healthy, OP. It also sounds as though you have been brought up in an affluent environment where ‘want’ of things wasn’t a feature.

Interesting becuase you're right, there was no hardship in my childhood but my parents were thrifty to the point of miserlyness. They still are, they're very comfortable but they hate spending it and have a house full of stuff that might come in handy one day.

I spend a lot on experiences. Hardly any on stuff. I prefer to be easily mobile.

Lamelie · 16/06/2023 17:51

It’s very liberating isn’t it. I have a random bowl wedding gift from 30 years ago that I’d be sad if I broke but everything else just clutter.
Agree about affluence though. I’m sure my ancestors would have been very attached to warm clothes and unspoiled food.

The only link is that people matter and objects don't matter, or not much. They matter to other people & if you respect that because you care about the relationship, then you need to look after their things. But that's about the relationship, not the 'stuff'.

Try the . Stuff doesn't matter, truly.

I cut out a piece of a stand up comedy with George Carlin. He's the best :)

Wealthy hoarders are still hoarders.

It's common for people who have grown up with a shitload of Stuff all around them to reject it in their own life. Because it's just Stuff.
