The courage of the Nottingham victims' families

Pointless post, perhaps, and I don't want to come off as a grief vulture. But I have been so moved by their speeches urging people to not succumb to hatred. I would have been lying prostrate, and cursing everything under the sun. Just immense courage under fire.

The tragedy of this is the perpetrator was obviously severely mentally ill & had been for some time. Mental healthcare is virtually non-existent these days.
I feel so sorry for the dad of the medic, as he looks absolutely broken. But he will also be aware as a GP of the many severely ill patients that can be a danger to themselves & others.

Too close to home for comfort with both our sons being away at uni.

I'm not sure I could do what they have done.

@Whatt I'm not saying they have any religion at all but I'd be sceptical about them actually being Christian. Saying you are Christian has been a way of proving you fit in here and therefore gain asylum, it also allows you access to all Christian aid and help as well as help with asylum processing through the church.
There have been multiple cases of people pretending to be Christian and turns out they are far from it simply to get through the asylum process.

I'm very sorry for what happened though.

Nottingham has pulled together and held vigils - the families
Came and are a central part of the city's outpouring of the sadness whilst people mourn these victims.
Murder is awful no
Matter where or who, but don't put a downer on those who come together and grieve

LAlady · 16/06/2023 07:25

It has really hit me hard. Two children at uni and lots of students I know at Nottingham. The poor caretaker too.

It doesn't detract from other murders but it resonates. Just like the student who was at Worcester and fell in water and drowned a few years ago. My son has just started uni so that one hit me really hard too.

The families have been extraordinary. I can't begin to imagine what they are going through.

I’m sure the families of Barnaby and Grace would give up everything single penny they have and all their middle classeness if it meant they could have their children back again!

Of course. My heart breaks for them. I was responding to a previous poster who didn't understand why this was receiving more attention that the usual gang related murders.

SlipSlidinAway · 16/06/2023 08:03

I have been overawed by the parents' and siblings' courage and dignity and can't begin to imagine their grief.and agony 😔

Oblomov23 · 16/06/2023 08:12

Their dignity made me shed a tear. I am again now actually. Ds1 is still in Nottingham, Year 1, won't be home till Saturday.

JustDanceAddict · 16/06/2023 08:16

I think it’s more the randomness of the attack and you think you’re safe going about your business and someone murders you at 4am on the way home from a party. As a parent of a uni student it’s not something you would even think about.
Someone killed 3 people for no reason and the investigation has to cover all bases doesn’t it?
I feel terribly for the families involved - they all sounded like great people who did not deserve such an awful end (and yes it’s sad when anyone gets murdered but if you are in a gang that’s the risk you run every day).

From Guinea Bissau? Mmmkay. Do some basic googling before you start bullshitting.

Not helpful and in this particular case factually untrue.

ButterflyParody · 16/06/2023 08:49

The families were very brave to speak, I also saw a copy of a post made by Ian Coates brother

‘R.I.P Ian Coates, my brother. Ian had led a good life but Grace and Barnaby were just starting out’

I thought at a time of such sadness when your sibling has been murdered was a very selfless and kind thing to do, to think of the others. I also saw the note from the child who Ian Coates had helped at school when they had got locked in the loo and he had saved them.

I worked on that campus for close to 20 years and many of my friends are still there. Campus Universities are their own small towns. I hope everyone directly affected gets support and I hope that their families felt supported and loved by the vigil.

I keep wondering how that woman who was interviewed and saw the people mowed down at the bus stop is doing, poor woman was in shock and not seen an update on the bus stop victims yet.

Efacsen · 16/06/2023 09:11

@ButterflyParody a man remains in hospital in a critical condition according to yesterdays police report

Other casualties have been discharged

ButterflyParody · 16/06/2023 09:15

@@Efacsen thanks for the update on those people, I would imagine they are at significant risk of developing PTSD.

He'd been in the U.K. since childhood and his family are churchgoing Christians.

Your assumptions and generalisations are not pleasant to read.

Yes I understand. I live within half a mile of the attacks- run and walk those roads- and it keeps bringing me to tears too.

I agree this doesn't have a place in this thread. Rampant obvious racism.
This guy comes from a very clever family that have been in the UK a number of years. I feel for his family as well.

Sorry this is addressed to @Whatt !

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/06/2023 11:44

Willmafrockfit

and how many people have drowned in Greece?”

We don’t yet know. I find that most people have the emotional capacity to feel sadness and sympathy for more than one terrible event at a time. This thread is about 3 deaths in Nottingham.

Willmafrockfit · 16/06/2023 20:16

@MrsSkylerWhite
i think possibly 600 Sad

That's absolutely awful obviously but do you really think that 3 people being stabbed to death at random and 3 people being run over isn't horrific as well ?

It's lucky he didn't get into the hostel he tried to break into as well would you have had more sympathy then?
