Hi My gas hob has only one burner working! and it’s doing my head in, So I was ready to just buy a replacement then my neighbour said why don’t you get an electric hob. I don’t because I like the instant heat with gas. She said oh it’s all changed now it’s all pretty much instant with ceramic hobs and induction etc. is she right? Am I stuck in the dark ages? let me have your experiences and advice please Tia

Nope, your friend is wrong. Gas is the best way to cook and nobody will ever convince me otherwise. It's more controllable than other methods.

As for your burners not working, I assume you've done this (and no judgement if you haven't) but have you given them a really thorough clean? It's easy for them to get blocked so the gas can't get through.

MicrowaveRice · 16/06/2023 01:09

Induction is instant and easy to clean, ceramic is crap.

frozendaisy · 16/06/2023 01:11

I swapped gas for induction about 3 years ago and it's been brilliant. I wouldn't ever go back to gas now. Induction hobs can heat things up extremely quickly, they turn themselves off if anything spills over, they are dead easy to clean and they look very smart. We also linked ours to the extractor fan, so the fan would get stronger or weaker depending on what temperature the zones were (or something!). You will need special induction pans if you go down that route though.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 16/06/2023 01:51

Induction all the way, not ceramic.
Instant heat, easy to control, looks great and best of all it's easy to clean. I would never have anything else.

Groutyonehereagain · 16/06/2023 04:51

I’m a massive fan of induction hobs. You have instant heat and no mess. What’s not to love? ❤️

PermanentTemporary · 16/06/2023 05:01

Im moving to induction hob soon as we are aiming to stop using gas for ecological reasons, and I do think they are great.

redspottedmug · 16/06/2023 05:49

We're on our second induction, even DH is a convert from gas.

Most newer pans are induction friendly, so you may not need to change yours. Can still use cast iron for example.

Canyousewcushions · 16/06/2023 08:06

Induction hops are amazing; I was really dubious having hated a ceramic hob we inherited when we moved into our house as they look so similar.

Am a total convert to induction though- really responsive, can be way quicker than gas to boil water as the heat is so targeted, and they are so easy to clean. I noticed this year that great British menu seems to have switched to induction.

It is worth looking at reviews and considering how much you want to spend etc. We have a cheapo ikea free standing single hob that can just plug into the wall (bought for use while the kitchen was done up), and it's perfectly acceptable but is doesn't have the same level of control as the much nicer fancy hob we installed in the kitchen. The more high end one has small enough heat graduations at lower levels that we can even just melt chocolate in a pan without burning it. The cheapo temporary measure one had bigger jumps between temperature settings- though as above it was still waaaaaaay better than ceramic ans I reckon it was on a par with gas.

Canyousewcushions · 16/06/2023 08:07

(And happily our 20 year old pans were all fine on it as we'd picked ones with stainless steel bottoms..new pans aren't a given)

Pashazade · 16/06/2023 08:09

Yup love my induction hob, mostly for how easy it is to clean! I only lost 2 or 3 pans from my collection but my main pots all still worked. You do have to triple check when you buy new ones. I actually got some extras as part of my deal when I bought my hob. But definitely change they're responsive and quick.

reluctantbrit · 16/06/2023 08:13

We moved to induction 7 years ago and I wouldn't go back to gas.

One of the advantages for me is that in my tiny kitchen it doubles as workspace if you are careful. It's dead easy to clean, no issues with hot spots like the old electric hobs and so far I managed to cook everything on it I cooked on my old gas burner.

Only issue - it's a glass plate and can break. 3 months in and I dropped a glass spice jar I kept on a cupboard above it on it and the hob cracked. So all glass jars have been replaced with plastic.

AnxiousShep · 16/06/2023 08:24

I’ve gone from gas to induction. Thought I would hate it but I love it.

Riverlee · 16/06/2023 08:28

Sitting down so I don’t keel over…

An induction hob is similar to gas in that when you turn the heat down, it’s instant unlike an electric hob which takes a while to cool down. They are easy to maintain, although my niece has broken three by dropping something on them.

parietal · 16/06/2023 08:34

Induction all the way.

IKEA does v good cheap induction pans that work better than some of the expensive ones we got from elsewhere

AnxiousShep · 16/06/2023 08:37

Oh, and the pans I had already are suitable for induction. Have a look on the bottom of the ones you have.

JenaWren · 16/06/2023 08:38

Just switched from gas to induction and wouldn't go back. I love it for all the reasons the PP have said.

One thing to watch if you are switching. Your electric circuit might not be up to an induction hob. I had to have a new cable (and new fuse box) for mine.

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 16/06/2023 08:39

Another vote for induction, I would never go back to gas UNLESS I had a heart pacemaker fitted as apparently the two don’t go well together due to the strong magnetic field from the induction hob.

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 16/06/2023 08:41

Induction all the way. Easy to keep clean and instant heat! Love it.

Just check your pans are suitable (need to be magnetic) and if not cost in new pans as part of your hob replacement.

Bluevelvetsofa · 16/06/2023 08:42

I think you have your answer OP. Induction all the way and stainless steel pans.

ButterflyParody · 16/06/2023 08:59

Do not change to electric. Get a new gas job and if you can get a 5 burner one with a wok burner in the middle.

I used an induction job at my friends house and hated it, bad for stir frying.

Blanketpolicy · 16/06/2023 09:05

So responsive and easier to control than gas, much much quicker then gas, safer than gas and an absolute dream to clean with just a quick wipe.

MargaretThursday · 16/06/2023 09:44

I was unconvinced when dh suggested induction rather than gas.

I've was convinced within a week we'd made the best decision. When my parents came down to visit they went back and ordered an induction to replace the gas they've always had.

Go for induction. It has all the advantages of gas, plus all the advantages of electric-and a few more advantages.

I love gas!!! The only way I wouldn't go with it is if I was getting an induction range cooker or an Aga 😂 so unless someone wants to plop loads of money in my account or I win the lottery I would never have electric. Had no end of bother with them.
