Teen girl shaving

Hello!

I know there is a topic for teens but posting here for traffic.

Teen daughter (13) has started to become self conscious about the hair under her arms and on her legs.

We’ve had wonderful weather but she won’t wear her skirt to school without tights because of it. Weirdly she will happily wear shorts out of school, but maybe there is more opportunity for someone to say something to her in school about it.

She would like to start removing the hair under her arms regularly and occasionally her legs.

I have always shaved when in the shower. I am not particularly hairy so have never even been to be waxed!!

Any advice on what works best at this age? Traditional wet razor? Electric razor? Hair removal creams?

Thank you!!

My 16 year old uses cream but I've persuaded my 14 yo to be waxed by me. She has a better pain threshold 😄

Mumof1andacat · 15/06/2023 22:24

I have a phillips lady shave rechargeable. I think its great. Very safe. Can be used wet or dry

LifeIsPainHighness · 15/06/2023 22:25

Perfect each to learn to shave - and I think a good quality razor and shaving cream will do the trick

@Mumof1andacat does it achieve quite a close shave?

Could we share one and have our own blades or does it not work like that?!

If she is going to shave I would 100% recommend Estrid razors. They give a close shave and are the best razors I have ever used. Waxing is great however you need to allow the hair to grow for around 5 weeks in between sessions so she may become self conscious when it grows out

Thatsridiculous · 15/06/2023 22:31

@SummerSazz I’ve never even waxed myself!!

Shes also asking to remove the hair on her top lip. She is pretty hairy, so I do understand why she is a little self conscious. I would love her hair. I’ve had poor, fine, lank, hair my whole life. Hers is fabulous and she has the most amazing eyebrows. Unfortunately this means she’s generally more hairy everywhere else too.

@Twinklegolden that’s actually really helpful as I’ve just been looking at Estrid!

I am slightly paranoid at the thought of her using a razor on her own but I suppose I probably did at her age…probably used my mums old bic razors too!!

I wasn't sure about razors for my teenager so I bought her an electric shaver. Lots of reasonable priced ones in Boots. She's very happy with it.

The blades are very sharp and the handle can be slightly slippy as it’s metal but hopefully she’d get the knack of it. When I was your daughters age I used cheap bic razors and shredded my legs and bikini line to bits with shaving rash - ouch!

There might be tips on their website or even here for teen use!

You can't change the heads/blades. It's a whole unit.

Mumof1andacat · 15/06/2023 22:39

Sorry. I find it quite a close shave. If anything, I like it for a quick once over if short on time. I wet razor will give the closest shave. Stick with your known brands for razors Gillette or Wilkinson sword.

dementedpixie · 15/06/2023 22:40

My dd uses the olay razor with the soap bars attached. There are guards across the blades to minimise injuries. I helped dd the first couple of times and then left her to it

I found that the electric ones are rubbish and don't give a close shave

SunSunGoAwayButNotCompletelyPlease · 15/06/2023 22:54

I would recommend shaving. It's the quickest, most pain free, easiest and does not disturb the roots (which may stimulate hair growth). Waxing is super painful especially with thick hair and it's a faff waiting for your hair to be long enough so that you can wax it again. Also it does disturb the hair roots so might stimulate hair growth (it did for me).

I don't like hair removal cream because it stings so it makes me worry about what those chemicals will do to my skin.

I don't have much experience of electrical shavers but I find I get the closest shave with a Gillette fusion razor and shaving foam (both Olay and Gillette do nice ones). You have to change the blade though frequently as it gets blunt quite quickly.

PinotPony · 15/06/2023 23:00

My goddaughter started having waxes at 13. She's 18 now and has hardly any hair regrowth.

SummerSazz · 16/06/2023 10:30

I waxed from 15 (well, an older friend at beauty college did it with me as her practice!) and I have no growth in my legs at all, although tbf I am 50 😂

I now use an epilady and don't find it painful at all but my DD's did. That was a fun experiment 🤣

I would def recommend waxing (we use the pre-prepared strips which just need warming in your hands). It means far greater gaps between removal and does (for me anyway & I know a pp disagreed) mean the hairs come back much softer and thinner.

Sammysquiz · 16/06/2023 10:50

Another vote here for Estrid. I use one, and so does my teen DD. I used to cut myself all those time with my old Gillette Venus, especially doing my knees, but the Estrid is far better.

Thatsridiculous · 16/06/2023 12:45

Ok thanks everyone - going to give Estrid a go and we will practice together on her legs initially.

Hadalifeonce · 16/06/2023 12:48

My DD was much the same as your DD, dark hairs on her legs so quite obvious. I started paying for her to be waxed from about 13, it takes a while, but the hairs are diminishing.

afaloren · 16/06/2023 14:23

I love Estrid razors. I enjoy getting them through the post and never running out too.

Would you let her wax OP? I've waxed my daughters legs since she was 9 as she is v conscious and she is v grown up for her age, already 5"1 and looks like a young lady already 😵‍💫 Wax will help the growth slow down, whereas shaving will encourage it. Just a thought anyway, each to their own x

I would let her get waxed, yes. Although I’ve never done it, if it was easier for her then I would happily pay for her to get it done. Think that might be better than me doing it?!

It's very easy with the wax strips. Warm the between your hands, press on and the rip off quickly from the bottom. You just need to pull it back up parallel with the leg rathe than up in the air if that makes sense?

I'm sure there's probably loads of YouTube videos to show how it's done. Salons will use a pot of warmed wax, a spatula to apply and fabric strips.
