Adirondack chairs - anyone have them? Are they comfortable?

Looking at getting some for the garden but not sure how comfortable they will be. Although as they seem to be on lots of outdoor porches in the US I assume they must be fairly comfy.

Many years ago in the Southern Hemisphere we stayed with someone who said they were called a cape cod chair and they were the most comfortable garden chair he’d ever sat on. They were really expensive at the time so he spent many trips going to the garden centre, secretly measuring the dimensions bit by bit, so he could attempt to make a copy. Poor guy cocked it up somehow and couldn’t make one. I often think of him and the Cape Cod chair when ever I see one.
They are on my wish list, I tried one out in a garden centre a couple of years ago & it really was comfortable.

is there a Range store near you? I think they have them, you could pop in and try one or Google a garden centre near you and see if any have them in stock to try out.

We've got some around our log burner. They're more comfortable than you think, also you can put a cushion on. I love them!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/06/2023 20:10

Love mine. Turquoise keter version and stays outside all year round. But I do feel like Ronnie Corbett when sat in it.

Yes! We have multiple at our holiday home in North America where they are ubiquitous/mandatory. Very comfy. The only potential issue is getting out of them

GulfCoastBeachGirl · 15/06/2023 20:26

Yes, very comfortable. Add a cushion and get one of the matching footrests! They are a staple here (New England state).

Belindabelle · 15/06/2023 20:59

I love mine, very comfortable especially with the footrest. The arms are plenty wide enough to put a glass, mug, small plate etc so don’t really need a table. I use them in winter with a sheepskin on for warmth. Sometimes place a cushion in the small of my back but fine without.

I haven't tried that specific type of chair but I've been in a lot of garden centres lately. DH and I were shocked when we sat on a bench selling for £500+. It was seriously comfy. We sat on a bench that cost £120 at the next garden centre and it was uncomfortable. You couldn't have sat down for 5 minutes. Apparently the price reflects quality and comfort 🤷🏻‍♀️ honestly, our £1500 garden sofa was on par with that bench.

Thanks all.

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 - I don’t have great memories of Ronnie Corbett. I once had a bit of an “accident” (dodgy tummy related) in a hotel restaurant in India while he was also there. DH likes to say I shat myself in front of Ronnie Corbett. All I will say is that DH had to go back to the room to get me a towel. So constantly feeling like Ronnie as I get out of the chair may not be the best idea.

@Peridot1 🤣🤣🤣 thank you that made me laugh!

I am very short like Mr Corbett. At the end of the two ronnies show, he used to tell a story/long joke from an oversized chair. Apparently that’s what I look like, as my feet are nowhere near the ground. It was famous in its time. (I am also ancient according to the teenagers at work).

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/06/2023 23:18

Don’t let Ronnie out you off having some seriously comfy Adirondack chairs @Peridot1

justasking111 · 15/06/2023 23:23

We had a beautiful pair of these. Between house sales stayed in a rental and they were stolen 😕.

Bought cushions for them, they were so comfortable, never wanted to get up

Peridot1 · 15/06/2023 23:50

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 - I remember that oversized chair at the end of the Two Ronnies show. I’m ancient too. Although it was only on as my dad liked them. Honestly! Actually thinking back to actual Ronnie I’m not sure the chair was oversized really. He was quite little. And his wife was quite statuesque in comparison.

will try to find some chairs to try.

My memory of them from Canada is that they are very very comfy to sit in, and a bit of a challenge to get out of as your bum is considerably lower than your knees. Great for developing your core strength as you heave yourself out though! Still love them...

EVHead · 16/06/2023 00:01

Really comfy. I have one like this with a table. My favourite place to sit.

Now I'm older a steamer chair with footrest is easier to get out of 😂

80sgirly · 16/06/2023 01:00

We have the Keter ones - maintenance free! Very comfortable.

sausage767 · 16/06/2023 02:22

We have 8 of them. Two in the traditional white style, and 6 of a modern version that we made ourselves for around the firepit. They’re all really comfortable, but the homemade versions are a bit difficult to get out of, especially after a few wines. I suspect we made the angle of the seat too steep.

😂That's quite the visual! But I am very impressed that you were able to make your own Adirondacks. They are very pricey here🙁8 would be quite an investment!

The modern version is this, ours look almost identical, but we've painted the frame a darker grey. They were super easy to make (if you have some tools like a drop saw) and very cheap.

@sausage767 Very nice! And perfect for a fire pit. I really don't remember seeing that design before; I like it!

KickAssAngel · 16/06/2023 05:24

I live in the US where you can pick plastic ones up from any hardware store dirt cheap.

They are comfortable to sit in, but you are committed to sitting back. You can't perch or lean forwards, or sit upright. I don't actually like them that much.

these ones from Costco with a lumbar cushion are very nice.
made of recycled plastic, won’t fade or warp.
they are hard on the back of the knee, the sharp angled modern one would be a no for me.

Doingmybest12 · 16/06/2023 06:11

We've bought the plastic version from the range to try it out before buying the wooden ones .Not sure they are as big as the wooden ones but stackable and easy to move around. Happy with them.

Doingmybest12 · 16/06/2023 06:12

Wish I'd seen the Costco ones , like the red.
