Cycling on the motorway

Cycling2023 · 14/06/2023 20:43

DH decided to cycle from London to St Alban's today and on his way back, was apparently very dehydrated and had a dead phone so accidently ended up on the motorway.

He called the police for their help to leave the motorway safely and they took down his name and details and said he would be sent a fine. Does anyone know how much it could be and if this would be a FPN (where it doesn't show up on DBS and CRB checks).

This is the first time he has been fined for anything so we are actually quite worried as it is all unknown to us.

Thank you and please be kind.

Not the first one today?

I worked in a 999 control room for 12yrs, I never ever heard of a single such call in that time.

Motorway signage is extremely distinctively for good reason.

If he isn't good when he's dehydrated, he needs to plan routes he actually knows, and take responsibility for his hydration.

Andanotherone01 · 14/06/2023 21:14

This wasn’t an accident though was it? It can’t have been. He’s just making shit up so he doesn’t get in too much trouble

MargaretThursday · 14/06/2023 21:14

So he was in such a state he couldn't work out to dismount, and walk up the verge and off the motorway... but was clear-headed enough to find one of the orange phone boxes and call the police?

Hmm. I'd suspect that he thought he could get away with doing a short cut using the motorway and got caught by the police.

@Cycling2023 Thanks for the explanation. Some slip road on the A1M near us are no more than tarmac-ed back roads, with very little signage, so can sort of see how this happened. He should have dismounted immediately and walked back.

However, hindsight is a wonderful thing😁

Trust he is rehydrated and feeling better, OP

Ah, yes, I travel on the A1(M) as part of my journey. I do see how it could happen there to be fair.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 14/06/2023 21:15

Which motorway was it? It’s hard to believe somebody could accidentally end up on a motorway when cycling!

It could potentially happen on the A1(M) I suppose.

No point in doing that.

He will get a summons through the post in a few weeks and will need to either plead guilty and avoid going to court (the results will be sent to him with the fines , court costs etc ) or go to
Court if he pleads not guilty - howeve bear in mind that traffic officers have dash cam and body worn cottage that would be used in evidence .

Yeah, but it would really help the OP if she knew the amount. A fine can be anything from £50 to a few grand, not everyone has that kind of money lying around!
I mean, I doubt that they'd want it all in one go, there'd be a payment plan of some sort surely. But it's still useful to know.

LittleBlueBrioTrain · 14/06/2023 21:16

I don't buy his explanation. I reckon he thought it'd be a quick route home and got pulled by police.

Huh. That's a good point.

morelippy · 14/06/2023 21:20

He's a bloody liability and he deserves everything thrown at him. How ridiculously stupid can you be.

That's insane. I don't think anyone at all would, as a cyclist, deliberately join a motorway as a short cut hoping to avoid all the many many cameras, whilst risking their own life, just to save a bit of time. I think @Cycling2023 husband's explanation is far more plausible.

croft89 · 14/06/2023 21:22

For somebody that must surely be a fairly serious and competent cyclist (to attempt this journey) this makes no sense

Flat battery, no water, cycling on a motorway, cycling in a temp in the high twenties

Very odd

Ascension - it will be don to the magistrate on the day - it's not a fixed penalty notice - he has been reported on summons by the sound of it so there is no way of knowing what the penalty would be .

Isn't there a legal maximum though? They can't suddenly fine him 1 million pounds.

Says the max fins i s£2.5K

Cyclists warned of Highway Code rule that could lead to £2,500 fines

Some laws surrounding cycling changed last year with one rule meaning that riders could be issued with huge fines if they ride in an unsafe manner.

AnyaMarx · 14/06/2023 21:30

Ascension of course there is a limit but it's down to the magistrate in the day so unless the 101 call ah slept is in possession of a crystal ball they will not be able to tell the op what the fine is - and there will likely be court costs on top .

He's just gonna have to own it , plead guilty and see what the fine is - there are payment olans for those who ca t pay up front .

He's broken the law by doing this unfortunately- it's not just an accident - it's extremely dangerous- he could have been killed or caused an accident involving other innocent people. It's not just a case of oh dear silly billy ! Here's a fixed penalty notice .

He'll just have to wait till the court date . There is nothing else he can do .

Yeah, I'd agree with this.

If he genuinely made a mistake surely he'd just get off and turn around, not call the police?

morelippy · 14/06/2023 21:32

He chose to use the roads and broke the rules so he needs to suck it up. I can't imagine a car driver being excused for 'dehydrated'. He should also be banned

merryhouse · 14/06/2023 21:33

Why on earth did he decide to go for a long cycle ride in the first place?

I mean, particularly if he knows his judgement is impaired when he gets dehydrated (which suggests that can happen quite easily...).

I would suggest that when it comes to His Big Manly Hobby his judgement is impaired right from the start.

If it's A1(M) I can actually believe it. I travel on this road a few times a week, and tbh in my original reply I'd forgotten about this motorway part of my journey. You'd think it was a dual carriageway were it not for the blue signs. I've not come across a cyclist on this stretch, but I have come across pedestrians, and if my memory serves, and I'm not getting confused with another motorway, I'm pretty sure a colleague was delayed due to an out of control horse and trap on here.
