Ds insisting on a coat

Ceci03 · 14/06/2023 17:00

So DS is 14 and is insisting on wearing a coat and hoody at all times. It just makes me mad. He is so sweaty anyway! He says I need to mind my own business. I guess I should just let it go right. Just makes me so mad. He's just gone out with long sleeve T-shirt track bottoms thick socks runners hoody with the hood up and a quilted coat. Maybe he just likes winding me upConfused Grrrrrrrrr

He is 14. Smile and wave!

PuttingDownRoots · 14/06/2023 17:04

Teach him to use the washing machine so you don't have to deal with the excess clothes b

NoraLuka · 14/06/2023 17:04

DD2 does similar, she only stopped wearing a coat when it reached 30 degrees where we are. Apparently ‘everyone’ does it 🙄

Why does it make you mad?

Just let him get on with it 🤷‍♀️

Sirzy · 14/06/2023 17:05

I think it’s one of those things where you just have to pick your battles.

although before that I wokld want to be sure he isn’t wearing long sleeves to hide self harm (I’m not saying it is or even is likely to be but always worth being aware)

CrumbliestCrumble · 14/06/2023 18:13

Sod all that extra unnecessary washing.
Id be annoyed too tbh.
Plus surely imhw could overheat and become unwell. My car read 34.5 yesterday at one point. So blooming hot

IwishIcouldButIcantSoIwont · 14/06/2023 18:17

Teenagers are known for being difficult Grin. I remember one of my sons, at that age, refusing to wear a coat and/or jumper in winter. After nagging and getting nowhere, I left him to it. He quickly realised how uncomfortable he was.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 14/06/2023 18:18

Manz not hot!

StillWantingADog · 14/06/2023 18:20

Leave him to it but insist he sorts out the extra laundry himself

sleepyscientist · 14/06/2023 18:20

Aslong as he's not doing it to hide self harm I would let him get on. I spent this morning finding the thinnest pair of trousers I could possibly wear to work then drove past loads of kids in hoodies so guessing it is common

cocksstrideintheevening · 14/06/2023 18:28

It's the opposite here, teenagers want to wear a t shirt in the snow. Let it go.

I would be slightly concerned about self harm though.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 14/06/2023 18:56

When I was at school it wasn't cool to wear a coat. Would be freezing in my school shirt. Kids are weird.

OhHeyBabe · 14/06/2023 19:00

Is he self conscious? I was at that age and wanted to cover up as much as possible.

FearTheWankingDead · 14/06/2023 19:00

Remember when he was a toddler and wouldn’t wear proper clothes and would only wear one welly, one flip flop, a pyjama top and no trousers?
It’s the teenage equivalent of that.

pickledandpuzzled · 14/06/2023 19:02

Self harm, or to annoy you. Or to look like his mates.

All actually perfectly reasonable. Some of us come late to realising comfort trumps style!

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 14/06/2023 19:03

For a lot of teens it's their armour against the world...even though ironically it probably makes people pay more attention than if they were just in shorts and Tshirts in this weather.

Just encourage plenty of fluids and have a chat about the warning signs of overheating just in case they really misjudged things. Otherwise smile and wave!

BarbaraofSeville · 14/06/2023 19:26

I've seen a few people in puffa jackets over the last few days and I can't imagine how hot they must be.

But as long as it's not for anything illegal (eg hoodies up to disguise their face on security cameras) and they're not self harming/trying to disguise an eating disorder, then let them crack on. They're old enough to suffer the consequences of their choices and it's not like they're going to come to any lasting harm.

mondaytosunday · 14/06/2023 19:37

Is he overweight? My son wore hoodies in summer in Spain one year because he was so self conscious. He put himself on a strict diet and exercise regime and lost 40kgs. No more hoodies!

TheCyclingGorilla · 14/06/2023 19:38

My DD hates coats. Even in December. I just let her get on with it.

sevenhusbands · 14/06/2023 19:39

My DD was like this until she reached 14, honestly it used to drive me insane. Now we have the opposite and she's barely covered when she leaves the house ;)

useitorlose · 14/06/2023 19:56

Possible reasons: everyone else does; concealing his body due to self harm or body dysmorphia or eating disorder; secret tattoos; difficulty regulating body temperature (interception, often linked with autism); sheer bloody-mindedness.

Absolutely this. Not the hill, OP. Handholding, though - it's hard watching them be twats

VioletCharlotte · 14/06/2023 20:16

All the teenagers boys around here are walking round in hoodies and tracksuit bottoms. The girls are in skimpy shorts and crop tops!

Wait until winter, the boys will all be out in the snow with no coat!

bcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyza · 14/06/2023 20:46

Not quite the same but my son wears gloves all year round.

I just go along with it.
