My dog was badly assaulted at the groomers yesterday- not sure what to do next.

Yesterday I got to the groomers to collect my dog to be told she got stressed and bit her tongue. Blood was pouring from her mouth! When examining her I also saw her eye was red and swollen.

I took her straight to the vet who told me she had received a substantial blow to the side of the head and there was bleeding within the eye and she had reduced vision.

They think she bit her own tongue from the blow.

I phoned the groomer later that afternoon who insisted nothing happened and she just got stressed and bit her own tongue.

Vet said this would not happen just from stress.

As groomer is denying it and I have no proof (apart from an injured dog) I'm not sure what to do next. But I can't do nothing and risk another dog being injured.

Any advice?

Thank you for the update. I often think of your dog when I pass a local groomer.
I'm glad you've found a nice groomer who comes to you. Hope your dog is fully recovered.

A full groom on my tibetan terrier, when he was in full coat, would take me 4 hours, although at the time I did not have a blaster dryer and I would take breaks.

For a big breed, double coat, long heavy coat, a full clip out (they have to be bathed and dried first generally even if being shaved bare or you dull blades and overheat them and risk the dog even more) or a detailed fancy trim, yes, 3+ hours and its normal for dogs to spend half a day or the whole day in there.

People do not want to groom their own dogs. It is hard work and needs training and patience from day 1. For many breeds it does also require space and some expensive kit.

People don't bother, they think a groomer can deal with it every few months and they need do nothing in between, resulting in dogs with sore skin and mats, who are grumpy about being touched and hate grooming... because it hurts!

Unfortunately coated poodle x types are SO popular now and these really do need regular and effective brushing and grooming between clips, but they are buying from breeders who tell them its fine to have the dog clipped off every six weeks and not really explaining the necessity of grooming in between those visits.

This is why I have a Whippet!
Teeth daily, nails weekly, a quick zoom groom and polish and done!

Even washing her after every walk in this endless muddy weather is easy compared to more complex coated breeds -
I saw a Golden retriever a couple of days ago who had been wallowing in mud.. he was like a creature from the Swamp.
I didn't envy his owner one bit.. cleaning and drying a heavy coated breed is not easy.

However...Whippet coat is at a disadvantage in that it is not weatherproof.
The rain soaks through to their skin, and they get cold fast.

An Hairy lurcher we had was almost weatherproof.. Driving rain, and she'd be dry underneath as the outer hairs funnelled the rain off.
She did throw her coat with a vengeance twice a year, so I would zoom groom a lot, which luckily she liked.

It's really sad how people don't keep on top of grooming.
Mats and ropes of hair in poor dog's ears and the ''Bottom region'', it's not comfy for them.

Then one sees the heavy coated breeds shorn all over like a lamb- WHY have a heavy coated breed if the hair is going to be shorn off? but better that than matted coats that will pull on their skin and hurt them.

Any Groomer who doesn't have CCTV I'd be wary of.
Even WITH CCTV, one has to be careful.
There have definitely been cases where dogs have been hurt or even died at a groomers - literally leaping off a table while restrained by their poor necks while the groomer is on the phone in another room {presumably to get away from the barking}, or dogs left to overheat in a drying 'pen'.

My friend learned how to groom his little poodle mix after trauma at a groomers.

Dogs remember where painful things were done.

You Tube ''Girl with the Dogs'' is lovely.

She does a dog one on one..It's oddly soothing watching her.
