Nadine Dorries' constituents - they can't be happy with this?

summerskirt · 14/06/2023 09:55

Ever the egotist, Nadine Dorries is causing mischief by not formally resigning as an MP, despite claiming she would do so with immediate effect last Friday in support of Boris Johnson (and presumably in a childish strop over not being made a Lord). The Conservatives are unable to call a by-election until her resignation letter is received. In the meantime she gets to hang about in parliament saying all sorts of Trumpian nonsense and garnering media attention, and will presumably hope to be there to speak her "truth" when the privileges committee report into Johnson's conduct is published this week.

Why on earth don't her constituents kick up a fuss or kick her out?! She clearly gives zero fucks about them or about her duties as an MP, only about her own trajectory and being as --closely aligned with Boris Johnson's backside as possible

ROFL

Indeed. She's the invisible MP. I don't know anyone who's written to her or contacted her office and even got a reply, never mind any help.

salmonlinguineplease · 14/06/2023 16:30

I'm a constituent too. She's done so little for so long that we won't notice not being represented. Local Facebook frequently has people saying they've written to Nadine about an issue and then everyone piling on , saying she never replies. Even the local school children ( year 4) each wrote her a letter about a local issue and 18 months later still no acknowledgment.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 16:32

She also won't host most local schools in Parliament or come in to meet them.

I could say more about her as have v close connections but too outing.

I'm going to wait and see who canvasses hardest and vote for them. I don't care who it is, as long as they aren't wearing a blue rosette, I'll be happy.

We managed to scupper the Tory overall majority in the last local council elections, so maybe the tide is starting to turn...

The only canvassing we had in the locals was from Tory and Reform Sad The other parties fielded paper candidates so they clearly don't think it's worth trying round here.

Our new Tory councillor is popular, and was seen all over mid Beds campaigning with Greg Hands, Robert Jenrick et al last weekend.

It was a few years ago, and I got a reply. Not from her though, but from her daughter who basically said no, she was not going to help in any way whatsoever.

Gee, thanks for nothing

Swallowdoubleandrunamile · 14/06/2023 16:50

Another constituent here, the woman is an absolute, complete waste of space.
I emailed her office last year, still awaiting a response.

LlynTegid · 14/06/2023 16:55

Not the first MP to be invisible, hardly seen once deciding to stand down, or even when seeking re-election. Example I am aware of were the many comments about Jo Swinson not being in her constituency much, thought to have contributed to her loss in 2019.

That's why I'd like to see the form of PR used in the Irish Republic. You have more than one MP and can replace one with someone from the same party.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 17:01

You quite simply cannot compare Dorries with Swinson.
Not even close.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 17:01

I have had a reply from her. Twice!

ChocHotolate · 14/06/2023 17:03

Maybe she will return to being a nurse...supporting grass root NHS.
Maybe not...!

The only benefit I ever had to having her as an MP was it made general elections easier.. I didn't have to think long and hard about who to vote for, I would just put an X for whichever candidate might come second.

That's the thing - if you live in a safe seat you are essentially disenfranchised because your vote won't count in your lifetime unless you up sticks and move somewhere else. That's disgraceful, when you think about it.

I guess for some there's a pleasure in not having to care about voting for a useless Tory MP like Nads because it suggests that whatever problems they generate for the UK, it doesn't touch you. It suggests a lack of empathy but I'm not being as judgemental as it sounds, it's like how many of us turn the newspaper page on some tragedy in a foreign land.

My MP is Chris Grayling and he is in a very safe seat - Epsom. Labour have never put up anyone of stature, maybe they will next time but if a snap election is called they will be struggling. Grayling turned sarcastic and petulant over the case of our mother in a local care home being hounded by Social Services but I do suspect he was using the three meetings we had with him over the course of the year to carry out surveillance on behalf of Surrey County Council - a suspicion raised in a letter to the local paper that he has not refuted or responded to in any way shape or form.

But maybe there's a kind of indolence, a sense of luxury perhaps, in voting for the man and not really having to care about his ministerial record. Like buying the record of your favourite pop band as a teenager irrespective of it actually being any good.

I don't know anything that Grayling has done for Epsom though one advantage of having him as MP is that you simply never spot him out and about in that town, except when he's doorstepping for a campaign.

saraclara · 14/06/2023 17:38

Yep. I'm a Mid Beds 'anything but a Tory' voter. I always vote, but it's absolutely pointless.

With all due respect, we are not talking about her invisibility since standing down. We are talking about her invisibility in her constituency since 2005 when she was elected.

As far as I am aware, in those eighteen years she has never lived in the constituency despite its convenient proximity to London, and has in fact been living miles away in the chocolate-box Cotswolds.

In the last eight years, she has managed to write 16 - yes SIXTEEN - novels when she should have been representing her constituents.

Is she still doing casework?

Has she ever done casework?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/06/2023 19:38

She sounds like the sort of MP we have here. The Tories get in here, come what may. We have a useless one who replaced the previous useless one. It's so depressing when we have enthusiastic alternative candidates but they get beaten. However, we did get an Independent in the recent local election and the Tory came a very poor second, so who knows? Maybe there's hope.

To be fair to her ( can't believe I said that!) she has lived in both Harlington and Woburn. One of her daughters 'attended' local schools.

They have long since flitted, mind.

StillWantingADog · 14/06/2023 20:05

She is insufferable

our mp is a well known Tory. I thoroughly disagree with almost everything he’s ever said but Tbf he has responded to all letters I have sent him and he frequently turns up at local events including our kids school. He does at least make a reasonable attempt at representing local interests.

fortunately he’s realised he is on a sinking ship and isn’t standing at the next election.

Yep. Her daughter attended the same school as my DDs. I'm not sure when she scarpered to Gloucestershire.

Piggywaspushed · 14/06/2023 20:24

In which case you should possibly understand the speech marks!

WizardinTraining · 14/06/2023 20:59

I’m in mid Beds too. @saraclara thats exactly how I feel, my vote means nothing but I still wouldn’t choose blue.

She did actually help out with a campaign in my village many years ago but this was long before the jungle/books/Boris arse kissing.

What we really need is all the people who don't normally bother to vote because they think there's no point. If we can get them to actually turn up at the polling stations we might stand a fighting chance, especially if the other parties see common sense and just field one candidate between them.

ThreeFeetTall · 14/06/2023 22:26

@EyelessArseFace well it seems being "fucking useless and a total liability" doesn't preclude people from high office these days so maybe she is on to something

coffeeandbiscuittime · 15/06/2023 07:08

@ChocHotolate please don't suggest she returns to the NHS we have enough challenges- can you imagine her wafting round the wards , she would probably wear the stiff white hat and apron.

newnamethanks · 15/06/2023 07:16

O leave her alone, she is a sad working class maiden suffering the pangs of a painful rejection having been led astray by a Lying Toff. I'm sorry if she's your MP but really, I haven't laughed so much since Bojo got married in the RC cathedral.
