Need a soft drink with no sweetener

Any recommendations for a flat soft drink that doesn’t have sweetener?

I’m pregnant and very nauseous. Need a sugar hit in the morning before I can face any food. I’ve got capri suns which are okay but need more sugar really.

Fruit juice is too acidy.

Make your own lemon squash. A bottle of lemon juice from the cooking section, warm it slightly add sugar (quite a lot), you can grate ginger in at this point, leave for a day, then strain into a sterilised bottle. Dilute. It’s lovely.

Appreciate your concern but you don’t need to worry. I’m not at risk of gestational diabetes from one sugary drink in the morning.

I generally I keep my nausea under control by eating carbs, which helps. But I’m thirsty in the morning so need a drink before I eat. And I can’t drink water when my stomach is so empty because it’s too sloshy. If you don’t know what I mean I suspect you haven’t had pregnancy nausea (or ever been hungover)!

@Hazelnuttella

all too familiar with 'sloshy tummy', sadly all too familiar with diabetes too.

sugary drink first thing and carbs to fight off nausea, is actually a pretty good path to GD.

I know how hard it is, trust me, I really do.

Anyway, I've said what I think, I'll bugger off now & leave you to the sugary suggestions you asked for.

Best wishes for your pregnancy, birth & life the other side 💐😊

Fever tree is no artificial sweetener

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 13/06/2023 21:15

@ThursdayFreedom I had GD and was reassured that it was nothing to do with my (admittedly sugary during pregnancy due to exhaustion !) diet, it was due to the pregnancy related hormonal changes stopping my insulin working properly - eating extra sugar for a few weeks wouldn't cause GD but of course if you DO have it (due to your hormones) eating sugar or white carbs is dangerous.

Ribena

Mummy08m · 13/06/2023 21:17

Coconut water

reluctantbrit · 13/06/2023 21:30

If you need it first thing in the morning, would chocolate milk work? Like the Shaken Udder ones? I didn't have nausea but needed a sugar boost to get up in the morning and found a chocolate milk did the trick.

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 13/06/2023 21:32

Waitrose pink grapefruit squash is addictive and sweetener free

Thepleasureofyourcompany · 13/06/2023 21:33

Ribena

I think all Ribena has sweetener now.

Rocks Blackcurrant is nice.

BitsAndBaubles · 13/06/2023 21:34

I listened to a podcast today by 2 guys who set up a drinks business called dash with no sweetener its flavoured water dash-water.com

Lcb123 · 13/06/2023 21:34

i make fruit tea using the teabags, like mixed berry. Then cool overnight. You could add a bit of sugar to it, and much more natural than the pre made drinks.

BarbaraofSeville · 13/06/2023 21:38

I'm currently drinking cold brew tea. Mine is a spiced ginger tea I got from Lidl with lemon. I just put a couple of tea bags in a big jar with a couple of slices oc lemon in the fridge for a few hours and it's done, but it would work well with any herb tea I think or perhaps normal tea.

enjoyingscience · 13/06/2023 21:43

Coconut water is perfect - not too sugary and it’s isotonic.

if you want a really left field choice I use active root ginger sports drink for running - it’s a ginger based isotonic powder so prevents nausea and puts sugar back. Might feel a bit medical for what you need though!

motherofbantams · 13/06/2023 21:47

Dash water is great - comes in 6 flavours, zero calories

This is lovely, and not too acidic.

This stuff is lovely!! Also in ginger, elderflower and just apple, I think.

Yes! Thank you, I couldn't remember the name of the other rhubarb drink I'd had recently. Dalston and Cawston are both lovely and sweetener-free.

PocketfulOfMiracles · 13/06/2023 23:32

Whittards do a ‘tea bag’ of sorts for water bottles that are sweetener free. strawberry and lime one is very refreshing and one bag lasts me all day when I keep refilling the bottle (loses strength obvious,y)

woodpecker2 · 13/06/2023 23:38

Sainsburys make a high juice squash in orange or apple and mango that are sweetener free.

LizzieSiddal · 13/06/2023 19:37

if you disagree, feel free to use your words instead of stupid little humfy emoticons

😱🤣😂🥳🤪

Oh I agree with you!

Imagine telling a nauseous pregnant woman to just change her mindset!!
I mean..OP just have a ginger biscuit and you'll be grand...

SoCalLiving · 14/06/2023 03:34

What about making iced tea, then can add sugar to taste?

Can do it in a jug and have some throughout the day!

Sadly true apparently.
There is Ribena and NAS Ribena but both have sweeteners Angry

Gestational diabetes has absolutely nothing to do with what anyone eats or drinks!!!! I cannot believe you are posting such drivel.

GD is temporary and caused by pregnancy hormones stopping you from producing enough insulin. You could live on mars bars and it still won’t give you GD.

Jesus Christ.

HappiDaze · 14/06/2023 04:35

A red can of full fat sugary Coca Cola always helped me with my nausea and hangovers for that matter.

That's the only time I've every really drunk full fat coke

Beluowens · 14/06/2023 04:58

StellaAndCrow · 13/06/2023 22:49

You mentioning hangovers has made me remember another one - pink still Lucozade sport, my hangover cure of choice :)
It's got the right balance of electrolytes so it's absorbed easily (or something like that :) )

This one I think
https://groceries.morrisons.com/products/lucozade-sport-drink-raspberry-4-pack-114047011?gclid=CjwKCAjwp6CkBhB_EiwAlQVyxfg2ewoTpT3IO-28sdOZBnjk_CDQqhgfl1aBCoY2TT1hUtCtXlYUqRoC2RAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

I came on to suggest lucozade sport too! I'm not currently pregnant but am waking up to feeling that pregnancy type nausea lately so have been having this or (as another poster suggested) chocolate milk first thing. A lot of the 'healthy ' chocolate milks contain sweeteners but sainsbury's do a good range of others in their chilled drinks section .
