Help and advice please... Was diagnosed over the weekend with a slipped disc in my lower back, been prescribed co-codamol (30mg), diazepam and dicolfenac. Still in agony, anyone got any advice or things that worked for them?

I had two at the same time in my neck! Awful.

Gentle exercise, heat packs, hot showers, I bought a massaging thing too. I took up pilates which made a difference.

Total sympathy it is just awful. I had completely seized muscles all through my lower back by the time my disc went. The main thing that helped was seeing an amazing physio. Had very very gentle exercises to do at first and also used a tennis ball to apply pressure and ease up my back. My physio said wet heat was more effective so hot towel type thing

I slipped a disc in my lower back a few months ago. Initially I could hardly move at all and also couldn't sit at all. It was absolutely awful. I had several physio sessions and followed the exercises and I'm now almost completely back to normal.

So physio - highly recommended.

Ooh also a tens machine. I can't imagine managing without one. You can get got not too expensive ones off Amazon.

LokiCokey · 12/06/2023 22:36

I was wondering about a heat pack as I find them really useful but it's been 30 degrees here today so can't face it! Confused

I keep thinking of things. I also googled how to get in and out of bed. It's worth looking this up (youtube) because it took a bit of practise but did make a difference.

LokiCokey · 12/06/2023 22:38

@RoxieLoxy I do have a tens machine somewhere that I got for migraines, gad t thought of that! Smile

I'm so sorry to hear about your back. I slipped my disc in April of last year and was bedbound for over three weeks. I'm still far from right and am waiting to have a second nerve root block injection before deciding whether to have a microdiscectomy.

I was taking the maximum amount of codeine, paracetamol, and naproxen, and took amytriptalene for the first month or so, but have now managed to reduce the painkillers quite a bit. I've found that I've had the best pain relief of all from wearing a tens machine. I've just been using g a basic wireless tens machine from Medfit and it's really made such a difference. It cost about £30 and a single charge lasts for about five days.

Thanks all, digging out TENs machine and trying to book a physio...
Couldn't even walk this morning despite all the painkillers!

gentle stretches and sitting on a donut helped along with gentle localized heat, worst pain ever and you have my sympathies!

I have the same so feel your pain.

I saw a chiropractor last week. It hurt like hell when he worked on me but it's a little better now, more discomfort than pain now. Today is the first day I've not taken any painkillers. Chiropractor told me to walk lots, which has helped especially as I'm at a desk all day WFH
