DD started new job today and is worried they'll fire her

She's just found out she's broken her hand. Office job. Hand now in cast so can't write (right hand), type or drive.

Friend shut car boot on it accidentally last night. It was swollen as hell but she said she didn't want to be stuck in A&E as she had to get ready for new job this morning.

Started new job today. In pain and even more swollen so bf took her straight to A&E after work.

Worried job will sack her as she obviously can't do the work they need her to do and cast won't be off for 6-8 weeks!

Can they?

She'd been looking for a new job for 3 months and was over the moon to get this one!

There are a lot of things she can do in an accountancy firm with one hand especially when just starting out. If she goes in with a can do attitude and the company are not horrible they will work something out.

I broke mine and I was an EA. Due to where the break was they put me in a slab for a week till the swelling went down and then a carpel tunnel splint which meant I could type.

How did she fare on her first day? Must have been very very difficult for her and I suspect they’ll have had a very good idea then that something was up

A big city accountancy firm will have a HUUUGE budget for staff costs of which your daughter’s salary will be a drop in the ocean. I’d be amazed if they sacked her. She should just talk to them and make it clear she is keen to work and do what she can until they cast comes off.

A big accountancy firm will be fine, but there's no harm in her being proactive, and making suggestions about say, attending additional e-learning sessions, sitting in on meetings, and generally making the most of her cast time.

She should also bear in mind that they might have stricter risk assessments than small firms. I've just started somewhere big whilst pregnant, and they've already banned me from the office as a risk. So they might judge that her hand makes her a bit more of a risk than others.

Is it a permanent job or temp?

If the latter then yes, they will dismiss her

canigetitmyself · 13/06/2023 10:13

Sorry! Just read big city firm

Top 4, top 20?

She will absolutely fine. She can train with one hand

They have just spent money recruiting her - no point in wasting that investment for a temporary issue.

She will need adjustments for some time, including physiotherapy and potentially longer term as damage can take time to repair.

A good ambidextrous trackball may still be usable with both hands and requires less hand movement. I swear by this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-2226127-USB-Marble-Mouse/dp/B001DQY9AW - over the years I've tried much more expensive trackballs and always come back to it. Kensington do a similar style.

Ask for proper dictation software such as Dragon and allocate some time to train it properly. Built in voice products are fine for the odd command or document but working largely hands free is a whole different game and needs better software. Once up to speed its great, be prepared to find it tiring when you are new to working hands free.

Adjustments to working patterns to allow for more stopping and starting eg some tasks away from screens and desk scattered across the day as well as more short breaks.

Its likely that induction will be mostly screen based presentations followed by 500 pointy click ethics and compliance videos 😀

Oh poor thing, maybe show willing and attend but speak to HR also to see what their thoughts are. She should also be careful that overusing it now won't affect recovery rates.

As an employer I would feel inconvenienced but understand and to be honest I wouldn't want her in incase she does damage it further through work. Speaking to HR is the way forward. 8 weeks of struggling on is a long time.
