AC at home - anyone have it fitted?

I’ve been dreaming about getting AC for a few years - mainly since we moved away from the south coast to ‘Home Counties’ and for the past 4-5 years the summers have been horribly humid etc.. We already hit the 30c mark last weekend and I struggled to sleep (our loft conversion is a hellish sweat den!).

Plus I’m peri-menopausal and just do not enjoy the heat like I did when I was younger..

Anyway, looking for any experience / tips / cost for folks who have had AC put in at home🙏🏻

Maybe one day😅

We have it in our bedroom. It was pretty simple to install as only one internal unit and a shortish exhaust pipe run and we didn’t need planning permission as the external unit isn’t on an elevation visible from the street. It cost about £2,500 for the unit and installation from memory; costs do go up if you need long exhaust runs, or have non-standard wall construction, or your wiring needs upgrading for the circuit etc. We have a Mitsubishi unit but our installer said the eleqtriq iCool brand was also recommended.

For us we decided it wasn’t worth fitting throughout the house - DP works in the garden office and I either go in to my company’s air conditioned office in the hottest days and otherwise and actually tolerate heat in the daytime pretty well, it’s just sleeping in it I can’t do.

We had it fitted in two out of four bedrooms last summer and it’s AMAZING! we find running it and keeping all bedroom doors cools then all down (it’s actually chilly up here tonight!) and it even drops down into the hall and kitchen. Cost 1,800 per unit and it’s honestly the best money we’ve ever spent!

As an alternative. I know you said fitted. But we bought this last summer just before the heat wave!
it’s amazing. We have a massive bedroom and within about 2/3 mins it’s very cold, if we open doors it cools the landing a bit too. https://www.ryman.co.uk/5000-btu-portable-air-conditioner-in-black-1

Its electric and it comes with a hose and a metal sheet thing, rhat you have to put out of an open window. Basically where all the hot air goes! Anyway I was really impressed when we first got it. Was about £250 I think. It’s heavy, on wheels and not huge.

We have a unit in our loft with a pipe leading down into each of our 4 bedrooms via a vent in each ceiling. If we leave the bedroom doors open it cools the whole of upstairs and you can feel it as you climb the stairs. It was £3.5k installed.

We also have an open plan downstairs aside from a couple of rooms so we have one unit in that space too. It seems to keep most of downstairs cool so I'm impressed with its power!

Best money we ever spent and worth every penny. We don't have it super cold but just keeps the house at a reasonable/cooler temp.

We got a price reduction for having it fitted in the winter. I can't recommend it enough. They come and service it annually in April before it starts to get warm to avoid potential issues.

We have it in 3 bedrooms and the living room - it cost £6k two years ago (Impatientwino you got a very good price!). We have units on the walls of each room rather than vents in the ceilings (our ceilings would not have enjoyed having vents fitted) and a single unit outside to avoid needing planning permission.

We looked at the options, and this was cheaper than moving, which we briefly considered - DH works from home, and struggles with the heat.

We had a portable unit before - it worked well, but was very noisy, and you lose a window to the vent. Plus you need space for it (an issue for us in several rooms).

It's definitely been worth it for us.

Thanks everyone, I am really keen to get it fitted for next year, at least in the two upstairs bedrooms (one is for sleep and the other is my office and I’m already really struggling!).

I already do have one of those portable units - they are good, but as PP’s have said, they are noisy and cumbersome and having to open a velux and poke it out means a lot of hot air sort of comes back in!
