Do you ever get bored on a cruise?

I've never been on a cruise before and have one booked for two weeks in August. Initially I was excited, but now I'm not sure. Looking at the itinerary, we have quite a lot of sea days and I'm wondering if I'll get bored stuck on the ship for this many days. I'm used to going on holidays where I'm out and about everyday.

Would be grateful if anyone can share their experiences of cruises (I'm going on a P&O cruise on the Arvia ship if anyone has direct experience on this cruise).

I hope not. We’ve booked our first fly cruise this September for a week and 2 weeks next year from Southampton.

Everyone I have spoke to raves about cruising. I’m planning to swim, eat lots, relax and crochet on sea days😍

Sirzy · 12/06/2023 20:45

There is a timetable of various activities on board each day.

you can do as much or as little as you feel like

mondaytosunday · 12/06/2023 20:48

Yes more than a couple days at sea I wouldn't be bored, but my kids would be.

I absolutely loved my cruises and certainly wasn't bored! I went with royal carribean

I'd get bored after about half an hour after setting sail, and I'd recall Doctor Johnson's remark that being in a ship was like being in prison with the chance of drowning.

scrivette · 12/06/2023 20:54

I went Pre DC and certainly wasn't bored on the sea days. Plenty to do and plenty to eat and I took books with me.

Anyport · 12/06/2023 20:55

The cruises that I have been on had activities from 6am until late in the evening. Its up to you how much you choose to be involved.

Superfrog3 · 12/06/2023 20:56

I did a cruise a while ago now and the ships have so much more on them now. I did get bored towards the end but then after some exploring of the boat I always found something to do. There is normally constant entertainment/ something going on. The pools do get very busy and aren't massive from my experience but all ships are different.

I would take a good book and try to embrace the cruising culture of just putting your feet up and watch the waves.

shivawn · 12/06/2023 20:58

No. We did a Caribbean cruise and there was never time to get bored, we only had one sea day however. We could have done with a couple more sea days to be honest, we were exhausted by the end of everyday!

I've been on two cruises and I found them on level of self indulgence that I've never been able to replicate. I went with my sister and we drank and danced and ate. We went in some trips but my favourite thing was staying on board for some places I'd been before and just using the spa and pools or gym when they were so quiet. It taking a book and finding a quiet corner. But mostly getting tipsy in a piano bar. CakeSmile

Shellsbelles · 12/06/2023 21:01

It more like you have to chose which activity you want to do most, as you can't do them all.

A transatlantic cruise may be different though.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 12/06/2023 21:01

They have like theatre shows and water slides and cinemas and all sorts on board.

nocoolnamesleft · 12/06/2023 21:02

I've never been bored on a cruise, and I'm easily into double figures of cruising.

stealthninjamum · 12/06/2023 21:04

I have been on a couple and I loved sea days. You can just sit on the deck with a book, watch TV in your room, borrow books from the library , watch events / lectures, casino, several bars, gym, bars, swimming pools. On one cruise I went on there were art classes, another had a university professor doing lectures on Europe in the renaissance, discos til 3, bands, comedians, quiz nights, music quizzes, bingo.

BlossomWood · 12/06/2023 21:05

Back to back port days can be tiring. You need some sea days to relax and get to know the ship and use the facilities onboard and have a good explore. But it depends what ship you're on.

lljkk · 12/06/2023 21:06

Kicking back to watch the waves & read a book sounds dull to me. Most the activities listed here would bore me, tbh. I like the idea of the cruise that feeds you breakfast & supper, & provides a consistent bed at night, rocking up to a new nice town/city every day to explore. Does this kind of cruise still exist? I don't need cinema or waterslides on board. But a moving at night hotel sounds cool, new places to explore for 8 hours every day without having to haul one's stuff between places. I like that idea.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 12/06/2023 21:06

Very bored but I was on for 8 months at a time

GraysPapaya · 12/06/2023 21:07

No time to get bored on a virgin voyages cruise! There were dance classes, gym, yoga, cocktail making, you name it! I absolutely loved it as I don’t like to sit still!

LemonDropsx · 12/06/2023 21:08

I wasn't bored as I could read etc but my teenagers/kids were x

Zipps · 12/06/2023 21:10

We've been on lots of cruises, never been bored. So much to do on sea days - eat, drink, gym, spa, swim, enjoy the sun if appropriate, read, join in with the entertainment or just look for dolphins. I do prefer the ones with mostly port days though so usually fly cruise.

skgnome · 12/06/2023 21:24

Have only been in one, there was so much to do on the days at sea
shows, activities on all the bars, live music, pools, gym, spa, unlimited food, drinks
theres no internet, even if you pay is slow, so my teen found it horrible
honestly just download beforehand
we had lots of port days
but even then a couple of days we decided to get back early to enjoy the cruise… my teen was fine with that since the port had 5G …
ao as long as you’re not an internet addict teen, you’ll be fine

Anothersolotrip · 12/06/2023 21:43

I was on Arvia earlier on this year for two weeks (30F) on a solo trip.
To be honest I was grateful of the sea days as I was knakered after all the shore excursions!
There is plenty to do, I was happy enough on a sunlounger but they have all sorts going on each day. Some of it was typical cruise ship activities (deck games, theatre shows, bingo) which didn't appeal to me but there are plenty of other things like mini golf, ropes courses and cinemas etc which were all great.

randomfemthinker · 12/06/2023 22:07

I went on the Arvia ship in February but a different holiday as was in the Caribbean and Arvia is sailing elsewhere now. There's lots to do on the ship on and off over organised trips. It's a massive ship and I loved my holiday on there. It was my first cruise and I think there's something for everyone x

WonderDays · 12/06/2023 22:12

I do tend to avoid cruises with more than one or two sea days, having said that I’ve never got bored. I’ve been on 20 cruises and there’s always a lot going on or you have the option to chill and watch the world go by. One thing I really enjoy is to watch any afternoon shows that are put on when it’s a sea day. Also I love having a long breakfast and lunch in the main dining room, I don’t like the buffet. There’s something about eggs Benedict with a sea view.
