What to wear to school “culture day” if you are white British?

Whatcanshe · 12/06/2023 13:34

My 14 year old DD attends a large state school in North London. It has a high proportion of pupils who are Asian and black. Last year for the cultural day the Asian girls wore saris and a lot of the black girls wore traditional Nigerian dress.

My DD is white and last year just went in jeans but is worrying about what to wear to this event on the last day of term. I have no idea what to suggest. We are not Irish or Scottish so can’t for eg wear a kilt.

I wish schools wouldn’t do this as it’s just a nightmare for some kids who don’t know what to wear. I know she is going to beg me to have the day off rather than have the worry of it all.

Any ideas as to what she could wear?

@Whatcanshe if you can tell us what musicians/ bands she likes we could probably come up with some suggestions based on that.

It doesn't have to be "History of Design" or Opera sort of level.

It can be Lego.

It can be a borrowed off an Uncle or something camper van t shirt.

I don't think it even has to be British.

If gaming is a big part of someone's culture. Or Eastenders, or Harry Potter, or bring northern, or food or..

Well everything's culture isn't it?

verdantverdure · 12/06/2023 17:20

I retract my earlier opinion.

14 year old me would probably be parlaying this into a new outfit or at least a lipstick.

At 14 fashion music and and make up were my culture.

Sausagesanddogrolls · 12/06/2023 17:26

Sliders and socks
DMs
Converse / trainers
Primark dupes footwear
Lounge wear
T-shirt and jeans
Leggings
Hoody
Any hair
Any make-up
Anything goes - this is Britain!

ThreeFeetTall · 12/06/2023 17:34

My child (primary) brought a regional food from the part of the UK we come from. Lots of kids in cubs uniform/sports team kits

fairywhale · 12/06/2023 17:36

Divisive, othering racist shite.

MoorRain · 12/06/2023 17:37

@Whatcanshe or maybe something from the ‘Greg’s’ clothes/shoes that are out at the moment.

No she doesn’t have a band tshirt. What is a bad tshirt anyway? She’s 14 so hasn’t been to any gigs. She likes lots of singers but we’ve never bought merch.

What kind of music does she like? Or what is her usual sort of aesthetic? Places like Urban Outfitters and New Look have T-shirts for Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Def Leppard. Most bands have merch available online nowadays.

Divisive, othering racist shite.

I'm sure that is the opposite of the school's intention but unfortunately that is the effect.

GobbolinoCat · 12/06/2023 17:42

Tar and feathers

reallyworriedjobhunter · 12/06/2023 17:46

I would be asking the school governors what they suggest.

Whatcanshe · 12/06/2023 17:50

JanesBlonds Oh thanks for the suggestion of band T-shirts in new look I will have a browse. She likes Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and others that I’ve never heard of!

Hi Op would she wear a discreet union jack tshirt with jeans like this?
https://amzn.eu/d/4LyhLyn

or maybe you could get a small tiara to wear and she could wear a floral dress or similar to reflect the royal family?

JanesBlond · 12/06/2023 17:56

@Whatcanshe They have some in H&M as well - eg this one of the Beatles Abbey Road https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0762558256.html
If she likes Harry Styles, Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, Arctic Monkeys, Muse, Ellie Goulding, Little Mix …? they are all British for example and you’d be able to get merch online

Oversized printed T-shirt - Dark grey/The Beatles - Ladies | H&M GB

Oversized T-shirt in soft cotton jersey with a print motif on the front, a round, ribbed neckline and gently dropped shoulders.

DressDilemma · 12/06/2023 18:20

What the other children from India and Nigeria are wearing is occasion wear - outfits they would wear to a special event, wedding etc. Your DD could also wear a nice outfit - dress, jumpsuit, trousers with a smart blouse are some options. Why is this making you angry?

StopStartStop · 12/06/2023 18:32

Best clothes.
Sports kit, team outfits.
Any music/art affiliation, eg goth
Business suits
Black commuter wear (this is part joke, one of my Asian friends says British people always wear black)
Family history - my gran wore clogs and a shawl on her first day at work age 14.
Dress as a museum/stately home/city guide
Choral singer kit...
Endless... the 'culture' is there, we just don't think of it in that way

They are American.

verdantverdure · 13/06/2023 12:40

Why does culture have to have a nationality?

NerrSnerr · 13/06/2023 12:42

@Welliehead it doesn't have to be British culture. Music culture is a thing!
